My dog ate crawfish. I'm not sure if it was cooked or not. I called the vet and they said to watch for throw up. Any other advice?

Taz ate a live crayfish once. Actually, just the thorax. He was fine.

I woke up today and he seems fine. However, he didn't eat at all last night. I'm not sure if crawfish are bad. I read on one website that the shell doesn't digest and that it can it can kill your dog. On another website I read that a woman has fed her dog whole lobsters and it was fine. I'm gonna watch him today and if I he starts to throw up I think I'm going to take him in.

Given that dogs, digestive-wise, unless there's something abnormal going on or allergies, are pretty much flightless buzzards with fur, I wouldn't stress too much about it.

Mine have gotten into shrimp shells in the garbage more often than I care to remember. They love them, and will get them within a nanosecond, no matter how well wrapped and how far down they are  It's like trying to keep someone with the munchies away from the Doritos.

There is a pretty nasty parasite associated with crawfish (some type of fluke, I believe).

I used to feed my turtles crawfish and it was discussed many times over on a reptile board about the parasite. I'm not sure if it's transmissable to canines, but may be worth phoning the vet and asking.

I'll try to dig up whatever info I may still have on my computer about it.

Someone say crawfish? :D

I've had several dogs over the years ingest a crawfish or two.....lived and boiled. None ever had an issue with them (other than 1 dumb dog having getting pinched pretty good).

Just keep an eye out on the bowel movements for a few days if you're concerned.

:rofl1:

OMG! I LOL'ed! You, madame, are hilarious. My dogs have snagged shrimp shells, too. Even I have eaten them, on accident! I never eat shrimp, ever... but my Dad forced me to eat some that he had cooked a few years ago, without telling me that the shell part had to be removed. I forced myself to eat a few, and I was like "Wow, uh, those were really crunchy!" I still haven't lived that down.

I hope your pup is feeling alright, Angie. You could feed him a cup or so of canned pumpkin, or some bread, to try to cushion his digestive tract.

Lol! You guys are too funny. Well I looked at his poo today and i found pieces of shell and what looks like a piece of a bone from a rib. He seems fine and is acting normal. Good to know that crawfish aren't going to do any real damage. Thanks to everyone for their advice:)
