I take Zoe on the same walk at least twice a day, and she loves it (she's just a year old by the way). Every once in a while- it's happened maybe three times- she acts terrified as soon as we get outside. Her ears go back, her tail down and she won't budge- or she tries to run back to the house. Now, I can't see or smell anything different, but she must. I have to put her on leash and make her go on the walk, then eventually she'll get her courage back and it's fine.

Is she smelling something, or is it an atmospheric change? She did it yesterday and there were black clouds in the sky with impending rain.

Just wondered if your dog did this.

Charlie went through a stage where he seemed to be scared of EVERYTHING but it passed. Is Zoe afraid of storms in general?

Xena will start growling at what I deem to be "nothing in particular" and she'll run to the windows. I figure she's seeing/hearing a small animal or something that I don't see/hear.

She doesn't like to go out at night very much and she knows when people are shooting fireworks across the street because she'll plant at the curb and not want to budge. You'd think a 250 pound guy could move a 30 pound dog but it's not as easy as it sounds.

My cat does. She'll be up on the bed with me, then all of a sudden she'll arch her back and stare at the doorway....sometimes even going into that "puffed up" mode that cats go into.

But Xerxes is more likely to sleep through whatever.

i think emma has "intruder" dreams or something. she will be dead asleep, and all of a sudden bolt up and start barking and growling.

We live in N California, so thunderstorms are very rare. I don't think Zoe has ever experienced one. She HATED the 4th of July, though!!

Hm.......then she may be reacting to the atmospheric changes, especially if it is uncommon where you live. Charlie always gets very excited just before a storm and then when the thunder starts he barks at it.

Osa does that every now and again. We take a walk every night after dinner and she usually does great but a few times we get halfway through the walk and she just doesn't want to go anymore. She puts on the breaks and only wants to head back to the house. I think it is because it is now dark when we take our walk and there are dark areas were there are no lamp post so she can't see ahead of her.

That's exactly what Bear does. He'll be sleeping and all of sudden get up and start running from the window to the door growling with the hair standing straight up on his back. There's never anything that I can see outside. But then as soon as he does it Dixie does it too. She'll start growling and barking because Bear is.
