Does anyone have a dog trained to go in a certain spot?

I would LOVE to make the dog yard bigger this spring/summer and fence off a huge section, or possibly one of those invisible fence set ups for the back portion of the yard.

The only thing that puts me off, is having to trudge around the whole yard looking for poop. I may fence off a smaller potty yard, and then have the rest of it be for under supervision only (it would also be the agility yard).

Has anyone done it? Is it a long-term thing or something that can be trained in a month?

Kind of- Caleb runs into the "pee pen" when we're out in the yard and the "need" arises. I didn't really train him to do that. He just made the association between coming out of the house and going in it and being in the yard.

I imagine you would just do it the same as house training, watch like a hawk, take them straight to the place when they go out, praise when they go there, quickly rush them there if they start going elsewhere.

Milo's sort of trained to go in a certain area...when he was a puppy I always brought him (either carried or call him over) to this back area of the yard and let him do it there, so he just always when let out alone runs to that area.

When I was a kid, my dad and stepmom moved, and my stepmom fenced off an area in their new yard with garden fence for the dog to potty in. She just took him to that spot the first couple of times, praised him for going there, and redirected him when he looked interested in going elsewhere in the yard.

Keegan prefers a certain area in my yard. It's the spot I took him to when he first came home, after a few days it was clear he preferred that spot. I think it just came naturally to him, but the advice the others gave you is good and *should* work.

It IS a little bit of a PITA, though, because now not only does he prefer one spot, but he prefers NOT to go anywhere else. I'm having a little trouble trying to get him to go when we're out in public. I'm making some progress, but it's definately something we're going to have to keep working on for a while.

Quinn does that, she doesn't care where she goes in the yard but I'm yet to have to pick up one poo from her out in public.

Morgan has "his spot". We trained him on it from Day One... it helped that we didn't have a fence for his first year-ish so we had to take him out on leash every day anyways, but here is what we did.

Walk him out to "his spot" (yes, that's what we call it and he knows it) on-leash and tell him to "go poop" or "go potty"... depending on the nature of the errand (ie: how long since his last meal, LOL). And then, we just stood there, leash in hand, and tried to be as boring as possible until he accomplished the task. We did repeat the poop/potty command AS he was doing business, too. Dunno if that helped him associate the terms any better, but that's what we did.

Now he's three, and when we let him out in the now-fenced yard, he will still make his first stop out to "his spot" before he does his romping and frolicking. Sometimes he needs a reminder to go all the way back there if it's raining (because he's a cry-baby about rain), and we do need to keep it cleaned up regularly, or else he will migrate outside his boundaries. Other than that, it's worked for us!

ETA: I have also found that having a name for "his spot" helps when we're out visiting or in public and I KNOW he has to go. I can just pick a secluded corner somewhere and tell him, "This is your spot," and 99% of the time he gets the idea that he can "use the facilities" there.

Thanks guys! Now I just have to wait until all this **** snow is gone. They are going to love having a super big yard to play chuck-it in this year.

When Chee-chee was still a puppy. He gets to pee everywhere in the house. But when he gets older, he has his a certain place to pee on. I guess that was a normal way when ypur dog gets older.

Yes to the edge of the woods, just inside of the brush where no one steps. Occasionally Victor will have to go so bad he wil nail my flower garden and hear me roar.
