OKay i have an issues... my dobermans obviously have a docked tail and cropped ears I love the look and am very happy i did it... but my boys tail has no hair he is constantly pulling at it... and I am wondering since this isnt my first dock... but the first like this if I should ask a vet to go in and cut the calassed end off where he has chewed and made it hard and hairless. I mean he does have hair but it is his tail hair that is covering the end... it has grown out to cover it....

If it is aggrevating him, that would cause him to chew on it.

but why would it be hard... because it is being chewed on? should i go to the doc and get surgery to take off that extra skin?

Possibly that's why it's hard. It's not unheard of for dogs having to be "re-docked" for that reason. They never leave their tails alone. Doesn't mean that is Prince's problem, it's just a possibility. Get your vet's input on it.

my standard poodle's tail is docked and she's three months and it doesn't look like that she doesn't bother it at all. Sorry just thought that I would add that, it probably doesn't do you any help.

I think he is allergic to something... not sure what but he has been doing it since i got him... i dont mind it he isnt sensative to it.. but he does turn around then chews on it... im gonna ask the vet next wednesday..

well it goes back and forth, from what i have seen. if you didn't dock, then there would be no problem. if you did, you would have been just following other dob. owners. although europe is stopping the procedure, which started it, at least on some of the breeds. don't think your dog is in any danger, just uncomfortable for your choices. still reading past threads to see what's going on here, so excuse me for just chiming in. really need to read a bunch to see what's going on here. i do agree that some things should not be done for vanity, i understand when it is necessary also. still learning, bear with me.

What about this...
Don't even know if it is possible, but just blabbing.

What if when the tail was docked, the bone of the tail was longer than any remaining skin, then when it was healing the overgrowing skin is too tight, and causes it to itch. maybe the calloused part is scar tissue to replace the damaged too short skin.

LOL, I don't know.. I have never seen it before.

I am going to do a search, I'll post any info, if I find some.

But I would guess a vet visit would be best.

Julie.

I found some info.

(I think this is what your dog has, But I am not a Vet!!!)

Tail dock neuroma
http://www.pdsa.org.uk/pages/page04_5_showa.cfm?q_id=10004

http://static.highbeam.com/e/evenin...ngland/september292003/petproblemsfamilylife/

Some more short things I found, from other sites.

Can docking cause problems in later life?

There is considerable scientific evidence that docking can lead to complications, including occasionally death of the puppy. In later life the stump of the tail may be painful due to the formation of neuroma (nerve tissue scar) in the stump. This also occurs following amputation of limbs in people and causes considerable discomfort.
