Mira's never done dock diving? How exciting! I got to watch some dock diving lessons my trainer-friend was teaching, the dogs were having SO MUCH FUN. I'm hoping Keegan will like the water, maybe he'll be a good dock diver. :D

It was a blast :) We are going back tomorrow.

We did a few practice jumps at an event last summer but other than that she's only done dock-diving at a lake, which is a very different thing lol...the dock is lower and ahead is all...LAKE. Not a crowd in chairs :)

But yes it was in conjunction with a pet expo so she got to meet several dozen dogs, people, and children (each). I was actually really impressed...there were literally hundreds of dogs there and I never saw a single snark...every child stopped and asked permission to pet a dog (and actually waited to hear the answer before proceeding!). It was a really really nice event.

So anyway the dock diving was a blast and Mira loved it. She doesn't really understand what she's supposed to do and I pretty much suck at throwing at the right time/place but we enjoy ourselves lol...she just kinda keeps running and sails into the water...she doesn't jump up at all just kinda keeps going. So 3 of the jumps were in the high 14's and one was really bad because I got in her way (oops!). So not like the pro's jumping 20+ but we have fun. I was getting lectures from the staff and pro handlers because my dog is capable of being right up there but doesn't know she's being asked to...yeah yeah we had fun anyway ;)

I have a couple vids so will upload them in a bit.

Fun times :)

Here we go...they are kinda repetitive so I just uploaded one. Here's our short but thrilling jumping lol...newbies, but happy newbies ;)

YouTube - M DockDiving

Announcers says the distance at the end -- 14' 10". Most of the newbies dogs were <10' or refusing to jump at all so I'm glad she was at least enjoying herself and not worried about it :)

Aww, yay! Dock Diving is SUCH a blast! I can't wait to get back out there this summer with Blaze.

14ft is great! One of the reasons I love dock diving is because the people are SO nice and helpful - even the staff.

Yeah you can't beat the people. Everyone's cheering for each other and the announcers are having fun and the crowd just thinks they are all hilarious and great whether they soar, balk, or belly-flop lol.

I probably won't have vids of Cheeseface tomorrow since hubby can't make it but will try to get vids of some of the really flashy ones :) There's a Mal there who was just nuts and a Toller that I fell in love with... :)

@MandyPug -- yeah see there's the problem...all the dogs have to overcome earth's gravity but some also have to overcome the additional attraction of the WATER! ;)

P.S. I swear she really does have a solid stay...I mean the dog does field work and has her CD and such for heaven's sake...but I don't normally lean over her when I leave (dunno why I did that) and well she was kind of excited about her first liquid water since early December :)

it doesn't help that she runs, pauses at the lip slightly then leaps. If only she would keep her momentum... just then maybe we could get to 10 feet. But ya 8 feet isn't bad for an 11.5 inch dog.

So when is your next one ;) ?

Tomorrow...lol

One set tomorrow. Well, theoretically there are the finals too but I don't know that we'll be qualifying for those lol. So up to two sets I guess.

After that...no plans. They aren't local very often, but when they are we will probably keep playing.

Jackson, DockDogs doesn't do it by size of dog, per se. They do it how how far the dog jumps. 10ft and under. 15ft and under. 18ft and under (I think). Etc...Then they have a 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place for each jump length. Basically you're competing against yourself to push you and your dog to the maximum length they can jump. Trust me, your not at all worried about the other dogs' lengths when you are up there with your dog. You're just thinking about doing the best with your dog. :D

ETA: You pay to enter a WAVE. Each WAVE has at max 30 handler/dog teams. These teams vary from big to little. You jump YOUR best. Then you get put in the 10ft, 15ft, 18ft, 20ft, etc categories based on how far you jumped.

Jacksonsmom>There is a 'lap dog' class, but dogs are pretty big still for lap dogs (I forget the measurements)

Titles are not progressive. 5 jumps in each jump 'catagory' (I think the first one is up to 12 feet) gets that title. So if your dog never jumps less than 12 feet they will never get the junior title.
