A thread on another forum made me laugh. Some folk find it disgusting to let dogs lick human plates, some find it totally natural. It all gets washed anyhow, right?

I know it gives my brother the heebie-jeebies when he sees Skye licking the pots. Probably why he always eats carry-out when he's here. Anybody else's dogs do the pre-cleaning?

not here. doesn't matter to me if they're washed in hot water in the dishwasher.......you couldn't pay me to eat off a plate that the dogs licked clean. course I wouldn't eat off a fork that my hubby licked. LOL I also don't like cats walking all over the table or kitchen counters. I adore my pets, but I just have set limits. :)

Debi,

Then if you ever pop over to Tenerife for dinner at my casa, you can share my brothers's carry-out. Though you may have to elbow the cat off the table first. :)

I used to go to a friends house who used to put their coffee mugs on the floor next to the chair only back in England they are much more likely to have tea in them, the dog would work its way round drinking the left over tea. When people came round and they couldnt find a clean mug, they would pick one up from the floor and swish under the tap then make tea for their guests in it, hence my frined always came to my house for tea.
I couldnt let me dog eat from my plates, she has a bowl for her food.

it's just me. I also will toss an old quilt on the bed for the dogs to sleep...but if I see one on my pillow....it all gets washed before I'd sleep on it. kinda fussy about my pillows. LOL :)

I am guilty of letting the dogs lick the plates and pans. We call them our pot scrubbers. TJ lets them eat off his fork... I don't do that unless I am done eating with it.

I've seen Arielle let the dogs take a bite or lick of something she's eating and then continue to eat it after their mouth has slobbered all over it... I also would not do that.

But the dishes and pans... that doesn't bother me because I know they are being washed properly and what's a little dog slobber... they smooch me all the time anyway..lol.

It's no different than someone drinking from the milk jug. And for those of you who visit other people's houses .... you'd be surprised how many people really do drink from the milk jug.

Not plates, but roasting tins etc.. They are very good at getting the burnt on bits out! LOL!

I wouldn't share an ice cream with a dog, Ie: one lick for me, one lick for him... That is a bit OTT in my opinion, but as the pans get slung in the dishwasher on an extremely high temp afterwards I don't see the harm.

I don't let them eat of the cutlery though, I would always be worried that they would spear themselves! Knowing how daft these two are! :D

And Gus has his very own cereal plate and tea cup if he asks for a cup of tea! Hee hee!

They are not allowed to lick my plate.
Not because I really care about the dogs licking the plates or anything like that... mainly just because it teaches then that after your done they are going to get your plate, so they start to sit and stare and wait. Essentially begging for food... and that bugs me.

We have done it but not very often. We have 5 Yorkies and it causes a little scuffle with each of them trying to get the best licks in.

Tosca will lick anything that's within her reach. I confess I lick her lick things sometimes but not as a rule. I think doing that too much makes them expect it and even become beggars, and then they get too used to human food--which isn't always the best thing for them. But for example, if there is a nice pot roast and some left over scraps...

Usually when I am cooking something that attracts her nose in a big way and she gets a little antsy about it, I give her a whole carrot or something like that to chew on nearby. Keeps her busy at mealtime.

eh...if i am eating something really yummy, i usually let him have a lick when i am all done...

My mother on the other hand lets him lick half the plates/tupperware in the house...and forks and butter knives (dont worry, she holds them out for him, and he licks them surprisingly daintily)...LOL

Doesnt bother me at all though as long as they get put in the dishwasher after!!!

Sometimes my parents will let the Doxies lick thier plates. I wont let them lick mine. Like Tim said, not like I really care about them licking the plate, its just I dont want 2 dogs begging at my feet. Which they do to my parents, who then complain and tell them to go away, to which I say that they created the little monsters, which results in me getting "the look." *Sigh* You can never win.
Huskies do get the left overs, but it goes in thier own bowls.

Not really the plates but if I have a yogurt cup or cottage cheese cup I let them lick it out when I am done eating. They know better than to beg and will lay down patiently waiting. Essentially the rule is the begger stays hungry LOL If they beg, no licks, if they are good, they get to lick

I babysit regularly for my mother at her house and always bring my dog. He loves to "clean" the baby and his high chair after he is done eating. Does a pretty good job!

I am with Sharky. I don't want to encourage them into being counter surfers/plate snatchers.

It has nothing to do with germs, all is clean when it comes out of the wash.

I also agree with Gus, I wouldn't share lick for lick with my ice-cream cone either.............I see where they put their tongues!

Whenever my dogs hear me open the dishwasher they all run to it to lick off the plates before I start the dishwasher up! Kind of funny!
