Do your dogs hang out outside alone?

I know we have a mix of indoor/outdoor dogs here on Chaz, but I'm wondering who's dogs are uninterested in being outside alone or for extended amount of time?

Milo isn't allowed outside unsupervised, but even if he is let out and I'm watching him through a window he wouldn't want to stay out more than 10-20 minutes max, unless he was swimming. He's never interested in just chilling outside, either he's swimming, escaping, or asking to come in.

Benji on the other hand refuses to come inside a lot. I'd still consider him an indoor dog as he spends the majority of time inside, but he has no probably just hanging out in the yard for hours at a time. Our old dog was the same way...indoor dog but kind of preferred to hang in the yard.

A lot of dogs I know that don't hang out outside aren't allowed or are really small kind of "purse dogs", but I have met a few that just don't want to be outside unless there are people entertaining them out there.

In the yard, no. On the deck (which has gates, they can't get off it), they like to be out most of the day when it's nice.

I don't have a fenced in yard, so mine don't really have the choice, but I do keep the front porch gated in the summer so the dogs can sit out with us and we don't have to worry about them running into the road after people or dogs.

Meg won't stay out there alone, even if I just run in to get a drink or something, but Gusto regularly will. Not for too long; 10 minutes or so and he's standing at the door. But he loves to sit out and watch the world. I suspect that if I had a fenced in yard and a dog door, I'd hardly ever see him inside if the weather was nice.

Yes I do when I am home. I have giant windows in the living room and can see all of my yard from the couch. Sometimes they bark a lot though so they have to come inside if they do.

Our yard isn't fenced, either, but Caleb won't even stay outside with my husband if I come in the house for something. He will, however, lay on the closed in back porch if the back door is opened. But, God forbid, I close the door or leave him on the porch for a minute while I come back inside.

When someone is home, they all spend quite a bit of time outside alone.
Especially when it's nice out they like to bask in the sun.

When his playmates come over yes, past that no.

He looks at it as the restroom area (Back right area, where he was taught.)

Though Mastiffs for there huge size are indoor dogs, or where ever there humans are.

At the old house with Byron and blitz yes. They never left the yard. I went to school once and left Byron outside :yikes: sitting outback when I got home just waiting for me to open door. Felt so bad. From then on if I didn't let him in right away he would bark. They were not outside dogs by any means but I could let them out and throw in laundry.

New house no way. We have dogs across the street who wander. Geese next door that do same thing.

12 year old shih tzu - rarely wants to spend much time outside unless I'm out there.
9 month old Bouvier - occasionally spends up to 30 minutes outside alone playing, or laying in a snow bank chewing something. Mostly wants to be wherever I am.

Harlow: most definitely. Doesn't matter if we are out or in, if she had the opportunity and it were nice out she would want to hang out in the yard.

Rider: He would probably be content to sniff around for about 20 minutes or so, but then would want back in. If I'm out with him, content to be out all day.

Tulsa: Oh god. I wouldn't let her out there unattended. We would have no yard left. She's a digger. I think for a short amount of time she would like it, especially if there was shade. But again, if I'm out with her content to be out all day.

Iggy: I think he would be content to hang out and chew on a ball.

We are putting up a fence next month, so this summer will be AMAZING for letting the dogs hang and being able to be outside on the patio and grill. I'm super excited. :)

Well yeah Hank did tear down my rose bush and also dug up a potted plant today. And my yard is full of craters.

At our house in the city she goes out to pee and right back in unless the weather's nice - then she'd probably be happy to bask for an hour, maybe too.

At the cottage we have no fences, but we are extremely remote, at the end of a one lane dirt road with no neighbours nearby, so she's allowed outside unsupervised. She will do 3 or 4 hours of squirrel patrol before coming in - but we're constantly in and out of the cabins so she knows we're nearby.

Roxie hangs out on the deck a lot. She doesn't really like being out in the yard alone though, because then she can't see me. Silly dog, lol. But as long as she can see me, she will stay out until it's dinner time.

Susie, my Bernese cross, has spent more of her lifetime outside than indoors. Kris, my Doberman, will spend hours outside when the weather is nice. I have an acre all fenced and she has pathways everywhere and races the fence lines to chase the deer. They are both a lot happier when I am outside with them but are content to spend time outside.

My Shih Tzu x Maltese don't particularly like being outside if I am not outdoors with them.

Kind of? I'll kick them out in the (6' privacy fenced) backyard unsupervised when I'm home all of the time. During nice days I may leave them out there for at least an hour or three. They don't necessarily like being outside for that period of time (after exploring behind the shed they normally just chill on the porch by the door), but I make them stay out for my sanity. LOL

They don't leave them out when I'm not home. And our "back porch" door is really a double window that is in the kitchen and I can see outside when I'm sitting at the computer/on the couch watching TV, so I always have at least a little bit of an eye on them.

Both usually just go outside to go potty and then stand by the door wanting back in. Wilson will go and explore the yard after a few minutes if I don't let them back in. Sam will start scratching the door if it's raining but if it's nice he'll go lay in the grass. He likes to dig under the fence occasionally though so he rarely gets left unsupervised.

Yes and no. At my dads house in his fenced in yard, the dogs go out by themselves but they usually aren't out longer than 5-10 mins. After 5 mins, I always check out the windows. Usually Jackson's just wandering around sniffing and peeing or looking for rabbits. lol.

Pip only truly likes to hang out if I'm hanging out, too. He will hang out with the other dogs but will jump at the opportunity to come back inside.

Squash and Maisy could stay outside forever. First, they love to play with each other. When they're not playing Squash just sits and watches the world go by and Maisy sunbathes. Either one of them would be perfectly fine outside alone as well.

Toast loves to play with Squash and/or Maisy, and he is usually happy to be outside with them. And he is happy to sit outside when I am outside. Under no circumstances does he ever want to be outside by himself.

Nope! He DOES NOT like it at all. If anyone is inside, he wants to be inside. It's to the point that he doesn't even really want to go outside in the backyard to potty if he possibly thinks you might leave him out there.

When I first moved to a house with a backyard, I used to leave him outside when I left for work, figuring that that was way better since he could pee whenever he wanted. But according to my roommates, he would cry and cry (not bark, just whine), so I finally started just leaving him indoors and he is much happier.

Nope. In the summer they'll lay out on the deck and sun bathe but even that is pretty short lived.

Happy was the only one who'd hang out outside, and that was weird and it was easy to forget she was even out there. Can't even tell you how many times I'd be about to leave the house and all of a sudden think crap! Happy's outside! She'd easily spend 30+ minutes just wandering the back yard.
