*didn't read this whole thread only the OP*

No, absolutely not! I think that's horrible. I can't even comprehend why someone would do that. Surely, i have bad days and can be snappy, but it doesn't have anything to do with the person's job. On those days i'd snap at a doctor just as fast as i'd snap at the mcdonalds cashier.

I generally am nice to most people. Except if they are rude, or the service is unusually bad. I can see if they are really busy at BK and are doing the best they can, but when you are one of only three tables in the place, and there are five of them sitting there chatting up a storm instead of making your food, well I get annoyed.

I also have a hard time with some people who don't listen, or have no respect for others. I used to work at a nursing home and HATED the two wives that always came in complaining about everything, and talked down to us like we had no idea what we were doing. In fact when I went on Mat leave and someone asked if I'd be returning, I said they were the reason I wasn't, I was tired of the abuse.

same here--I assume good of everyone until they demonstrate differently. However, I will say I have grown VERY tired of people who don't even try to help you out--like in a store, and you want a specific item--and it's not there on the shelf. when I ask, people look at me like I have two heads if I ask them to see if there are any available (stock room, another store, etc.)--I made the trip to buy something--I would think they would want to sell something! I worked retail--I know you can check on these things!
At the store I work at its our policy to ask if we can help guests find something. Lol I get the look like I have two heads when I do that.

Same here... when we don't have it in stock, I offer to call another store and have it put on hold.

I always try to be friendly to other people. My parents are the most different people when it comes to jobs. My mom works for the embassy and my dad is from a blue collar family.. So I grew up around cars, mechanics and what not, for example.

A lot of places can only put a certain amount of booze in a drink. At my casino our liquor is metered out by the Berg System. (Electric pours) It doesn't excuse her attitiude though.

It wasn't the amount of alcohol that was the problem. The entire drink just tasted like lime water. I don't think she put enough of the mixer in or maybe it was way too much ice. I dunno, I couldn't tell you how to make a drink. I can just tell you when it doesn't taste good! :lol-sign:

I don't get that whole mentality these days. No one wants to provide customer service. Don't these stores understand THAT is what keeps customers coming back?

I have worked for some big chains in my time but I was always expected to provide top notch service. I went above and beyond MANY times to make a customer happy and I was happy to do it. If I was like many employees these days I would have been fired.

I have always been that person working the crappy job. That's why I'm so sympathetic to those that do it. I actually tend to be nicer and more understanding with people who work as public peons. Especially if they seem to be enjoying their job, or having a good day. If I see someone treating a cashier or similar grunt like crap, I'll try to make them feel better after that person leaves. I'll relate some goofy story from my years babysitting gas pumps, or something like that.

On the flip side, I have reasonable expectations of people who do work those jobs. Yes its a crap job, but you should still treat it with a level of professionalism. When I hear those folks talking down about their co-workers, I don't like it. If they're doing their job in a half-assed manner, I think it reflects very poorly on them as people. If you don't like the job, quit. But don't make the experience a bad one for your customers and those who have to work with you.

The majority of jobs I have held are service based: waitress, consession/ticket seller at a movie theater, retail sales went I was in school, travel agent, Receptionist at a Dr. office, Call Center Rep. for a company that does the pre-screening for new drug studies. The last one has been very eye opening on just how rude, ignorant, poorly educated, verbally offensive, people can be. There have been times where I have been very close to just hanging up -- the people call us to participate, we make no cold calls. I try to be very polite to service people and insist that my kids are the same way.

I work retail. I LOVE it. I love talking to people, helping people, etc. and hold myself to a very high standard of customer service. I put my customers and their needs above everything else. Phone ringing? It can wait. We don't have what you want? Let me see if I can order it for you. I feel bad when it's busy and I'm at the store alone or with one other employee and can't address every customer the way I'd like.

The only time I'm rude is when I get crappy service from someone else. Or get attitude for expecting a job to be done properly. Is it really that hard to make my coffee with milk instead of cream? No? Then why is it wrong EVERY SINGLE TIME?!?!?!? *sigh*
