When you're getting a new dog, do you prefer a puppy or an adult?

I always thought I was a puppy person. Just cute little babies, and you get to see them grow.

But after having Zeus and Voodoo, I think I'm starting to *slightly* prefer adults (or at least adolescents). It's mainly because I've noticed the relationship is a bit different. An adult dog doesn't see you as a surrogate parent...it's more of a partnership from the beginning. And I think I like that kind of relationship.

And of course, there are the usual added benefits. No 2 a.m. potty breaks, puppy teething, etc. :D

Which do you prefer?

Currently I own a pup (one year) and a "golden oldie" (11 yr old dane) - they both have their own merits. I really enjoy the get up and go that Muggie has, I love playing with him and how excited he is to see me when I get home from work, but I also really really love how mellow and relaxed Sarah is - as far as companionship and loyalty goes, Sarah wins.

I've only ever owned Casey and got her as a pup so have had no experience with an adult dog. I loved having a pup though :D.

All of my dogs have been at least 1 year old by the time I got them, so I can't say I've ever had more than the last vestiges of puppyhood to experience/deal with.

All the dogs that my family ever had I remember we got them as puppies. I got Bear as an adult. I love puppies but I think that if I got another dog it would be an adult.

I love puppies!! They are so cute and funny when they are doing everything for the first time. Like the first time Zoe ever barked she scared herself and it was the cutest thing. I would hate to have missed those things, like her tiny enough to curl up in a frisbee.

I like adult dogs to, and wouldn't be against getting one. My bf got Buddy and he was like a year old. But I like getting puppies so I get to watch them grow up.

Smokey was 2 when I adopted her. Someone else did a great job of training her, housebreaking her and socializing her. She walked into my home and has been the perfect companion with no issues at all... I don't think I would have the patience for a puppy anymore....

I'm with Gempress, although Fila puppies aren't like other puppies in many respects, and Bimmer was COMPLETELY different than any puppy I've ever dealt with. I never even had to housetrain him.

I think there are benefits to both, so it probably depends on my situation... if I'm in a position where I COULD get a puppy and spend all the time required with it, I'd get one.
But otherwise, I would very happily adopt an adult from sheltie rescue. =>

This was a big debate between me and my parents before we got Auggie... they REALLY wanted a puppy, and I REALLY wanted to get a rescue. I kept telling them you won't want a puppy, they're so much trouble, they pee everywhere, so on and so on... but they insisted that if I got a dog it would have to be raised from a puppy.
So we got a puppy.
Aaaand I was right. XD

But honestly, the good outweighs the bad. It wasn't long after Auggie sort of grew out of the 'bad' puppy phases that I was like "I could definitely do this again."

I've had both, and the difference in the relationship is noticable. My boys are my babies, plain and simple. They're spoiled rotten, cooed at and treated like furry kids (don't worry, not to the extent that causes issues!) and they come to me for practically everything.
Patches and Elway are also definitely more of a partnership. I don't own them, I coexist with them. I don't train, I negotiate the terms of treat-dispensing. They're like two more Ripleys, without the attitude!
I really loved raising my 2 puppies (well, I say that now, but they were both royal pains) and would like to get another puppy, but there's also something special about adopting an adult dog.

Most of mine were " home grown " .......... but my last two were adults . It really depends on the situation . I wasn't ready to start from scratch again , so when Chip died , went adult again . Or should I say adolescent ! Daughter's getting a pup to grow up with Nash .........so there will be a puppy in my life again ! Can't wait !

I raised my three Ms from puppyhood, and wouldn't have it any other way. It's a given that raising puppies is lotssssssss of works, but I think it's totally worth it!

adult adult adult. hands down adult. my dogs are 4 right now and i'm pretty certain this is the perfect age.

i've never had a puppy. never had the serious desire for a puppy. housebreaking, tiny bladders, chewing chewing chewing. they're cute, sure, but cute only gets you so far ;)

my preferred age for adoption is around a year.

I LOVE Puppies ~ :)

Yo get to watch them grow and learn and learn to love you and you fall in love with them!!!

Awwwwww! I want a puppy!! :p

Also there are benifets from getting a pu instead of an adult dog....they CAN have less problems to deal with and unlearn them
