Generally I really enjoy taking Watson on vacations. Since we got him 2 years ago we've only gone away without him once, for a wedding. It helps that we have been watching our cash flow the past few years, so cheap vacations that are within driving distance work out better than expensive ones where we would fly and stay at least a week. We've taken him to rental houses in upstate NY, to Newport for a wedding (he was boarded during the wedding, but spent the rest of the vacation with us), and camping in Maine.

Not gonna lie, he's a huge PITA the first day. He gets mildly anxious and just has a hard time settling at outdoor restaurants or during activities. But after we walk his little legs off the first day, he's great the rest of the trip usually. By the 3rd day of our Newport trip he just passed out under the table at restaurants and was very well behaved on a whale watching boat.

The other bad thing is having to be outside the whole vacation. Especially when we camped in Maine, I felt like we just walked around town a million times because we didn't want to sit in the tent but didn't have many other options. It was an extremely dog friendly town but obviously we couldn't sit indoors at restaurants. I much prefer getting rental houses or cabins where we can hang out at the end of the day, and even leave him crated if necessary.

When we lived in Texas, we came home frequently and had to leave Kimma and Pen (only had those 2) for boarding. I HATED it. They both had no issue, of course, and the place I left them at is awesome, but I did not like being without them one bit. When we came home for Thanksgiving and Christmas we drove so that we could have them both with us.

Nowadays, I only travel to dog things, so dogs come with. We did go on an actual vacation to Mexico in June (DH's company paid so yeah, I wasn't going to turn it down) and it was nice to not have anything to care for for MAYBE the first like night (we got there in the afternoon). Then I was just bored and kept thinking that I would have rather had at least one of them with me.

Our dream vacation is to drive around the US in an RV with the dogs and visit all of the best roller coasters in the country. So that probably says a lot :p

If where we are going is dog friendly and our schedule is suitable for a dog, we love to take them with us. I hate leaving them behind, but it is for the best sometimes.

I *hate* riding in the car with Cynder, though. She literally never lays down, is always pacing, and always pants stinky breath right in your face. It gets really old after awhile, especially on the 12+ hour roadtrips up north.

The most annoying thing about Watson is that he can't be left crated in a hotel because he would scream and get us kicked out. In a rental house without close neighbors it might be doable, but not a hotel. He has minor SA and while it's fine at home, it would be worse if we left him in a strange place.
