Do you let your dogs bark at night?

If your dogs are barkers, what time of evening you stop your dogs from barking, to be polite to your neighbors?

Its after 11 at night and my mom is just letting her dog go off, YAP YAP YAP YAP!! I open the door to tell her that its 11pm and her dog needs to keep quiet, she then tells me that the neighbors are awake anyway. How she can tell that EVERY neighbor is awake is beyond me. I then tell her again that her dog is being too loud for this time of night, and she says "oh well".

It just kind of irritates me, because I know if she was trying to sleep and a neighbors dog was barking, it would be a different story.

In my opinion, I don't think a dog should get the privilege to be outside if it wont obey commands to be quiet, but thats just me and a whole other topic.

So, what time do you think is a good time to shut your dogs up??

Mine are inside with me at night, so if they are barking, there's a good reason. Several of my neighbors have told me they really like having a dog like Kharma in the neighborhood. Before I moved back to my house, there was a lot of night time pedestrian traffic that was not the sort that made people feel comfortable.

Kharma and Bimmer take exception to that sort of thing, especially when it's male and hiding in a hoodie. They are quite vocal in their disapproval and it's usually more loud snarling than anything else :D The elderly man across the street from me adores my dogs, lmao!

Mine are usually in by that time but if they are out for a pee break then 11 p.m. is definitely my cut off. There are two big dogs in two different neighbouring yards and my guys have conversations with them all day long. They also bark at pedestrians on the street or if other people are in their yard. They bark at the kids next door. I dont' mean they are yappy the whole time they are out. They just find lots of reasons to speak. The neighbours here don't mind but I do BUT think anything past 11 is just rude.

They have a different bark for people IN the yard. Steve and I can both tell the difference right away. And of course they don't get in 'trouble' for that :p

If they're barking, there's usually some cause for it. I try to shush them soon after though, because these are very thin walls.

I think, for some reason, smaller dogs like to yap more than larger dogs. My moms dog is a pug, and she barks at anything and everything, and sometimes nothing at all. Its so bad that it sounds like she is attacking the chain link fence.

Its nice to have a dog that actually barks for a reason I'm sure, lol.

Brenna is aways inside with me at night and has only barked once(Dad came home early in the morning), but if she was outside I would let her bark all night if she wanted too. The closest house from us is about a mile away so it won't bug them. Plus they are kinda some real A-holes anyway.

Mine only bark if there's a good reason to. If I'm sleeping, I usually hush them and if they keep it up, it's usually something worth getting up for.

I don't allow them to bark excessively at nothing.

My dogs go outside via the doggy door any time they want, but if they bark after eight, and I can't get them to stop without going out there, there's either something wrong, or its Booger, in which case I go out, bring him in, and lock him with us in the bedroom. None of our other dogs are barkers. The only time I've seen Doom bark is with his hackles raised and teeth bared. *shrug*

DUring the day our lot are outside, our house is small so they kinda have to be, so we leave the back door open and they usually stick they're heads inside to sleep in the doorway. Once it starts getting cold and ark they all come inside and we put down they're blankets to sleep on the floor for the evening.

Once we go to bed, Buster and Mac sleep in my sister and I's room. Harry and Sophie get tha laundry which is kind of semi detached to the house in that we can only access it from the bakcyard. We close itup when we bring them inside so its nice and warm by the time they go to bed.

Harry barks from there some night, I will either go out and tell him to be quiet or I'll grab him and tie him on the grass, wait for a bark, then offer him the laundry until he decides the laundry is the better option out of the 2.

I don't allow my dogs to bark excessively day or night. I wish my neighbors would afford me the same consideration.

If my dogs bark at something at night, it's generally something worth looking into. They rather enjoy their sleep, and if something is important enough to wake them up, then it's important enough for me to get up and look into it.

If mine were to bark it would be because someone is on the property and not knocking on the door. THey know the difference. It would be because something is very very wrong.

My two will bark only if there is something unusual--in which case, I like the notice! But I do quiet them--no excessive barking anytime around here--not tolerated and not needed.

I have a sheltie :) Quiet? Never.

She's usually not outside after 10:00 unless I take her out for one last pee break. One neighbour has a couple lapdogs that I can hear barking until midnight sometimes.

My neighbours aren't dog people so I'm careful about her being out too early in the am also. But if some dog in the neighbourhood kept me awake, I'd be calling bylaw people. If the dog can't be quiet put it in the house, for heaven's sake!

If they start to bark late at night, we get them in right away. Max is the hard one to get in because he starts barking if he hears the coyotes outside.

Yep, same here.

We live in town and the all the neighbor dogs bark constantly  I take pride in the fact that my two can be outside with the other dogs acting like fools and MINE don't :)

I think Orson took his cue from Phoebe about that. She only barks if there is a good reason and has been a good influence on Orson doing the same.

If they are barking that late, then I am up and out investigating. Otherwise, they don't bark and we don't "allow" them to be nuisances to the neighborhood.

My dogs wouldn't be out that late anyway, but if they were they wouldn't be barking unless they see/hear something.

I think for me, 9pm would be the cut off (that's usually the last time they go outside, anyway). A bit later in the summer, but I know my neighbor's don't stay up late. A few of them have toddlers too so you know that by 9, they're at least trying to get them to bed.

One of my neighbor's has dogs that start barking at 6am and they pretty much don't stop until 11pm. It's incredibly annoying in the spring/summer when we have our windows open, and when Lucy hears them barking, she starts growling too.

My dogs are inside by 10PM most nights, and earlier if they are barking. Sometimes they like to run the fence and bark, but I do try to respect my n'bors and not allow them to be loud if it is late or very early.

Ollie's usually in my bed by this time and only barks as a warning . When I moved here , there was a dog at least 2 streets over that barked all night long !!! I don't know how the neighbors stood it !! A year later it stopped ..................A constantly barking dog is RUDE !!! At any hour !

Reggin only barks when he is spooked by something. Its more of a growl... bark... growl... bark. Not a constant YAP YAP YAP. THAT I cannot handle. Its what my chihuahua does, of course  Yesterday I got her a bark collar and so far so good. I not put up with that kind of behavior with my dogs.
