Well, I'm in a weird situation right now .. *L* .. I'm living in a business rental, where there are huge windows and glass doors in a storefront area, and I usually access it through the back shop door. I have screens up for privacy but there's an active business right next door (with their stairs next to my bed, so anytime they run upstairs I hear it). They have machines that copy and print and sort and some of them are pretty noisy.
And in the tiny area I'm renting is my bed, table, bookshelves, TV stand, floor lamp, and dog crates (a little side room has the computers). Outside the front door is a huge gravel parking lot with the main highway just beyond that. You can hear traffic noises day and night.
For my country-raised dogs, this is quite a change and I've taken to leaving the TV on most of the time whether I'm there or not. This helps hide the noises from outside and next door and discourages them from reacting to those noises.
But the really funny thing is that I don't currently have an antenna or cable access, so I am limited to watching videos and DVD's. The only DVD I have that will play over and over is Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire .. *LOL* .. so if I'm going to be gone more than an hour and a half, I pop that one in and the dogs get to listen to it until I get back. All the other DVD's I have either click off when they're done, or they go to the main menu and then play the same irritating music over and over until you can't stand it anymore. The dogs probably don't care. I just think that having the movie on with the voices and all is probably more distracting than just the little bit of music.
Seems to work, anyhow. In the past six weeks they've all become quite blase about sounds from next door or outside. They do still react to noises from the back shop, which is good - my brother and mom both have keys to it and occasionally come in, and Khana always alerts to them before they surprise me.
Someday I will live in a normal house again, with a shower for me and a yard for the dogs .. *sigh*
