My boyfriend and I have wildly different tastes in dogs. I like hyper-affectionate velcro dogs. My preference is toward sporting and herding dogs, dogs that want to be constantly with me and work with me and thrive on constant interaction. That type of dog drives Jeromy nuts. He does not care for neediness in a dog; he likes animals a lot in general, but he's very selective about the type he would actually want to live with.

His ideal dog is a Shiba. Lol. I've met a few Shibas that I liked, but they're sooo not the type of dog I'd want to have myself. I think that he'd be a good owner for one, but we're so wildly far apart on what we want in a dog that it makes me laugh.

We agree on a few breeds - GSDs, and his parents had an Aussie he loved so we're on the same page there - but for the most part we're on opposite ends of the spectrum. Every time I bring up spaniels, for example, he teases me about how much I love "floppy moron dogs." Although I obviously don't think they're stupid, I can see why a guy who isn't a big "dog person" and likes primitive breeds would come up with such an assessment. ;)

Does your partner like the same type of dog as you? Do they even really *like* dogs or are they more tolerant of them than anything? Like I said, Jeromy likes dogs but I think it's more other people's dogs than really wanting them himself. He does not own a dog right now and would probably be okay with never having one, if that's what it came too, where I can't even begin to fathom a life without at least one dog. Luckily he is tolerant of my obsession! I am jealous of all you that have a partner who is into dogs too, though!

My SO just (barely) puts up with mine! He wouldn't own a dog on his own. Maybe eventually, way down the road, but I don't know. He likes Jasper quite a bit - pretty low energy, not very high needs.

Onyx and Yarrow are so not his style. So the dogs are definitely mine, totally my responsibility, but of course we live together so he has to deal with them daily. He complains about them a lot but of course he likes them when it comes down to it.

I am soooo jealous though of those of you who have SOs who are really into dogs. I would love that! Slowly working on converting him...

My current boyfriend says he wants a Cane Corso when he buys a house. I...do not. :p I could do a less intense mastiff for sure but I have no interest in a C.C.

He hasn't said anything about my breed choices but he's not quite into the knowledgeable side of dogs. I'm not sure he loves that my dogs are a bit needy/laying on you at night but he doesn't complain. He does kind of have a lab right now but it stays with his brother most of the time.

Yep, loves them. That being said I don't think he will vary, and I would.

Mine is in the 'probably wouldn't vary from one breed' category, as well. When we brought her home, he was like ..WHY DIDN'T WE GET A BULLDOG?! But now he says he'd never want another breed. We'll always have a Vizsla I'm 100% sure of that but he's very content to also want whatever next breed I get& he says he can't wait to be a multiple dog household. For a guy who wasn't sure he could deal with one dog, I'm very luck how much he took to them& how he adores her& I know she'll always be his favorite dog because she's his first (and she's awesome) but he will love every dog that comes through the door instead of just tolerate like I thought!

DH has never had his own dog and was pretty particular about what he'd be willing to live with (less than 10lbs, non shedding, low energy, doesn't poop, doesn't bark) and we got shedding, pooping, crazy Crossbone! Who he loves now more than me and wants every future dog to be juuuust like him.

After meeting a few dogs of "future breed" he predicts it'll be the best worst decision we will ever make :p

As long as the dog is smart, trainable, playful and has the "P" DH is smitten. And hey! That's what I like too!!!

My husband was more excited to get a dog than I was. He picked Kimma out (due to her markings) and luckily she turned out to be a match in temperament as well (though she's crazy). HOWEVER, he now has decided after seeing what it takes to raise a dog that he only really "likes" dogs, and doesn't "love" them like I do. It's OK. I take care of them in terms of everything, and he will sometimes play ball in the yard with the boys, let Kimma chase him, and cuddle with Bubbles. Bubbles is TOTALLY his girl, though, but she's so low energy that it works out. He still won't do things like taking them on walks without me there, even though he is an exercise freak. Go figure :p

As far as breed goes, though, he's met quite a few different breeds at dog shows and such that I've dragged him to, and I do believe that he thinks we made the right choice in getting Finkies. So I have that going for me LOL.

Very jealous of those with SOs who like to do and go to dog things.

Haha no. He is very tolerant of and supportive of my dog habit, and he loves the dogs we have once we have them, but he wouldn't have dogs if we weren't married to me.

Michael likes an all around good dog. (NOT a puppy.) A dog that doesn't destroy the house, is 110% housebroken, playful (which includes wrestling and man handling), bombproof towards stimuli, trustworthy around guests and in public and, more than anything, intelligent and OBEDIENT. He would not do well with a dog with an independent streak that wants to do its own thing, not his thing.

Luckily, I am a retriever person. :p And a retriever pretty much fits exactly what he likes in a dog, even though he isn't terribly fond of the "generic" retriever look. He prefers a good Shepherd mix, I do believe - that wolf look with the good sense of a proper GSD.

(Where did my baby puppy go?!?! Makes me sad that he's going to be over a year old before Michael gets to see him next. =[)

He probably wouldn't even have dogs if we weren't married.

He likes our dogs, but does complain about them a lot. He especially complains about Joey because Joey likes to bark when he plays. He gets frustrated sometimes if we have vet bills or if we have to get dog food, but I mainly pay for that stuff so...

As far as types... we vary a bit. I much prefer herding breeds and sighthounds. He likes pits and english bulldogs a lot. He doesn't like dogs to be overly clingy or overly independent. He likes something in the middle. I have a BC mix that is overly clingy and has to be near you ALL THE TIME and then I have Cricket and Joey who do like to be near their people, but are slightly more in the independent category too. I tend to like dogs more on the long lean side and he tends to like dogs with a little more muscle and girth (not fat though).

We will probably only mainly own dogs I want though. As much as I'm sure he would like to pick out his own, I'd be doing all the training and main care anyways so we will probably mainly own dogs that are my type.

That's pretty much my husband, too (minus the puppy). Although he knows the housebreaking/not destroying stuff is more a training issue. Which is why the Lab I show is always welcomed to stay here indefinitely. She is pretty much like Caleb in house manners.

He was so funny when we were talking about future breeds- we both like Rottweilers, and I mentioned maybe looking into getting one. His response was, because of how much I love sharing our dogs with kids, he would prefer a dog that kids aren't afraid of approaching. Silly guy! I told him, in general, kids wouldn't have a problem- it would be the adults with them.

But, yeah, he's pretty much a Lab guy. Although we would both like to have another Siberian someday.

...Luckily, I am a retriever person. :p...
:lol-sign: I was going to say your description sounded very retriever like.

Me, I really like the retriever personality, too, especially Labs & Goldens.

Nope. I like lightly built, long legged, coated dogs that are active and a bit crazy.

He likes little, round, more densely built non-shedding dogs. He hates dog hair..

NOPE

We both like "good ol' dogs" you know, generally behaved, sleep most of the day, house broken, happy, sweet, goobery dogs.

BUT I like the more active version of that.. versatile, CAN play all day..

To put it in perspective, he thinks his dog is the most perfect wonderful dog on the planet. He would clone him if he could.
This is his dog.. Rocky. The old fat pug with the tongue

Needless to say, he LOVES merlin but thinks he is high maintenance. Like "Why does he need to go out AGAIN? Wow he wants to play again? How long is this walk gonna go?"

Pugs to him are perfection.

Before him I had ZERO interest in pugs.

My husband and I are more Lab or APBT people. People loving, goofy, intelligent, trainable... I just can't stand the shedding :yikes: although I think I may tolerate it for another Lab in my life!
We just prefer a dog with a good off switch in the house, adults over puppies (we both do not prefer the puppy experience), generally well mannered, non yappers, generally non destructive.
So yes, we do have similar tastes in dogs.
Although..... my husband is not above strutting a tiny poodle, chihuahua or shih tzu around town (fosters) :D
