Do puppy's just some how get toilet training at some point? Sometimes I think shadow has figured it out, then she'll go and wee in the living room!

We've just installed a dog flap in our back door so shadow can go into our enclosed garden whenever she wishes, I'm away from her for about 4 hours when I go to work, and I hate the thought of her either being locked in the kitchen or locked out in the garden, this way she can be either in the kitchen or play in the garden. And since installing the dog flap i've been really pleasantly suprised, I'll come down stairs in the morning (shadow sleeps in the kitchen, she has her own basket in her own little corner!) and there was no mess! she's gone outside through the flap in the night! And when I came home lunch time from work, again she'd left no mess and gone out the back to do her "business". I could'nt believe it! She's only 10 weeks old!

But then to my dismay when I come home from work or in the evenings, she'll go wee on the kitchen floor or in the living room. I dont get it. She never seems to go for a number 2 in the house, only a number 1. Whats going on??!! I'll even take her outside, tell her to go wee, she wander around, do nothing, go back in the house and do it in the kitchen! I always praise her and give her a treat if she goes outside, and ignore her and try take her outside if I see her going inside.

What else can I do?

It takes a while. She probably wanted to go outside to play and just happened to pee at the same time.

I would close the dog flap though. You need to be with her when she pees etc so you can reward her if you want her to learn that she has to pee outside. Which means you have to take her out yourself, and stay with her. You will never train her if she can go out and in as she wants.

No it's ok when you are out, although I would be nervous letting my dog go out when I'm not there. But when you are home, it's important that you are with her when she goes outside.

10 weeks?!

Rocky's 5 months and 2 weeks and I'm still working on house training. Get ready for a big ride...

My dog actually may be house trained now though... it's been almost a week and no accidents...

I thought my dog would never get it. I have him trained to do the litterbox inside and when I could, I would take him outside at nights/weekends. Yesterday he finally "signalled" to me and sat by the door when he wanted to pee! It took about 6 weeks for him to "get it".

This mroning though, he sat by the door, thought he wanted to go. Took him out but he just wanted to run around outside. So who knows. Maybe it is premature excitement on my part.

I think how quickly a dog learns that potty should be outside depends on the each individual dog. All three of my dogs came unhousetrained. Colby was just a puppy. We trained her by bringing her out regularly, many, many times a day. She learned quickly. So did my other two. Now, whenever they need to go to the bathroom, they wait at the door. If they REALLY need to go, they whine and come up to me, which makes me proud that they're so good about letting me know, LOL. They only go inside if they REALLY have to go and I'm not there to let them out.

I don't know if my dogs are housebroken or not. I mean they will go outside if I take them out but it seems like they don't care if they go inside, or outside. Although they haven't had an accident in awhile so I have my fingers crossed that this keeps going. We left the other day (father's day) and were gone for 9 hours and our oldest puppy Mack and our Husky Shelby didn't have one accident (Hannah came with because I knew we'd be gone for awhile).
