I know I don't own a Dog, but I look and research different breeds of Dogs on the internet ALL the freakin time, and my family will make fun of me every now then saying that I'm obsessed with Dogs and I look at them too often. It offends me. >:I

Even though I don't own a Dog, I can relate!

Constantly.

I *hate* coming back from dog events, because the first thing I want to do is gush about how awesome of a time I had... but there is no one to gush to that doesn't tell me what a waste of time/money dogs are, and how utterly stupid I am for indulging in those wastes.

I'm so glad I've adjusted to not caring what people think, and not minding that I don't have any support LOL

For the most part my family respects it. Neither one of my parents can understand why I keep Gambit, when there are so many friendly and normal dogs out there, bur they are polite enough not to bring it up.

SO weird you just made this thread. I was literally just logging on to post something similar.

I just got back from spending a night with some friends out of town and they just simply don't get it. If I talked about Jackson like I do with my family, and people here on chaz, they would CERTAINLY think I've gone bananas. Heck if they knew I even belonged to chaz, I don't think that'd go over well. Luckily my family is really cool with the whole dog thing, so I don't have as big of an issue (though I'd never tell them how much I spend on collars and the like, LOL). They maybe aren't AS into their dog as I am but they all are still very much so dog lovers.

But like last night they made a few comments about my FB pictures and then one said something about me posting on the wall of a dog foods 'like' page and kinda laughed about it. I just laughed along or whatever but it DOES get irritating. To me, Jackson is like my child (but of course treated like a "dog" and allowed to do dog things lol) and I like to plan my activities around doing things with him. I think you just have to be a dog person to understand.

It's not that I felt they were being mean-spirited about it but I wouldn't feel comfortable talking to them about him a lot or the things I do because they just wouldn't understand so I tend to avoid the subject. Thank goodness most of my closest friends are now "dog people" haha.

Wanted to add to my little story, too... I got a little hurt/irritated when one of them goes "yeah, my boyfriend was like 'wow, Brittany must really love her dog'" (after I had posted pictures from the chaz meet up, I posted a lot because every one wanted to see their pics) and I just laughed and was like, well, yeah, whatever... and then another friend (who I consider to be the closest to out of that group) was like "...you put him in a life jacket!" I was like "so?" and left it at that but I was super irritated because she knows and is a big supporter of the foundation we created in honor of my little brother who drowned - of COURSE I am going to be extra cautious around the water with people AND my dog. There's nothing wrong with that.

Grrrr. The comment irritated me but I just let it go. Not going to get all pooey on them and ruin our weekend but it still annoyed me.

Not really. I'm pretty good at making sure I'm surrounded by people who are either understanding, equally obsessed, or just smart enough to keep their mouths shut :p

My brother does, but that's because he's my brother. He teases me about being such a drama nut, too. lol

Everyone else just doesn't care or is a bit interested.

There's a new Receptionist at my vets office, I guess they called this morning to remind me the ferrets have an appointment on Monday, and she goes "you have THREE?!". Even my dad thought it was rudely said

I actually hate talking about the dogs to other people who are not dog people, because they are rather clueless, and then I'm answering asinine questions for a half hour. So I pretty much avoid bringing it up unless I'm asked.
I agree...I really hate answering questions...but just because I'm not so good at not being rude. I feel like people should know some of this stuff, and I can't help but be a little bewildered when they don't. And I HATE when they ask about one of the senior dogs like they are expecting them to be dead or something.

I helped my friend's mom one time get a little dachshund. Worst decision ever, she would blow up my phone randomly with questions about like fleas and food and all sorts of stuff. It was cute for a while...then the phone conversations would end up like an hour long...yikes. I don't like people that much, LOL.

That reminds me of the time one of my friends asked if dogs actually respond to verbal cues.
I absolutely love this friend, but I couldn't help but be a bit sarcastic. I mean, really? lol

Haha, love it. The same friend's mom already had a dachshund that was 28 years old. Yup. Sure.

Where are you moving to? Just somewhere else in the same city? :)

i don't bring it up if people aren't into it, but most of my friends are dog people. And those that are cat people I can talk about my cats with. ;)
Of course my whacko cat thinks she is part of the dog pack LOL.
Somewhere else in the same area. Closer to my job.

Now, Mike did laugh at me and shake his head when we were discussing cars and I said I would own a Honda Element for the sole purpose of toting around dogs to shows and competitions and such if I ever got in to that.

Zomg my coworker had one & you can like HOSE THEM OUT!!! I was like "so ugly but SO MADE FOR DOGS!!!"

Most days I think 3 is 3 too many :p :rofl1:

Yah, it's not really *that* many, I mean, they're easier kept in groups IMO, however, most non-ferret owners can't fathom having one, let alone three.
I guess I got so use to people having a ton of them from back when I was on a ferret mailing list lol! 3 Just sounded normal to me.

Between the kids and the dogs, I'm really tempted to buy a good van, rip out the interior upholstery and hire those guys who do spray liners for trucks to come in and coat the inside.

People don't really say anything to me. My family all likes dogs and has them, so they don't mind chatting about dog stuff. Usually I don't say anything unless people bring it up, like ask me if Kaia has been to any shows lately.

Plus I'm into enough other things, yeah. I can always ask people about what they like, people always like talking about stuff they're interested in and I end up learning new things.

To be fair, people see having 3 ferrets as having 3 dogs, which isnt too far off, especially if they don't get along (having Ren and Rascal at the same time in the last year or so was hell and I'd be happy to never do it again) in terms of needing socialization, 1 on 1 time, adequate play time, etc.

(*Disclaimer*: yes, I realize that most of that stuff, is me making life difficult. Yes, I realize I *could* have ferrets never socialized and live their life in the house. However, I personally do not find that to be Adequate care for my ferrets, so I make do the "hard way")

Oh yeah, my family has always given me a hard time about the dogs. Their response is "Do you *really* need another dog?"

Well, no, its not like my life depends on me getting a dog, but I also don't feel its anyone's business but my own, and how do they know what I can handle? Its not like I have 20 dogs, I have 3, soon to be 4 dogs. Part of the problem is that they see all of my immediate families' dogs as a whole- my mom's two dogs, my sister's three dogs and mine.

People all have different passions- who is one person to tell another that they are wrong.

Nobody really makes fun of me about dogs, but I think it's because it's my career, and has been my dream since I was little. People talk about their jobs, I talk about my dogs, it's not all that different.

It does help that most of my friends and people I come into contact with are crazier about their dogs than I am. ;)

But I do tone it down when I talk to non-dog people. Instead of things like, "Keegan and I went to the park and he had the best time meeting people and dogs etc." (which is the real reason why I go to the park), I might say, "I went to the park to jog, and took Keegan for exercise too," which is the secondary reason why I go to the park, but makes more sense to non-dog people.

I'm not good in social situations, anyway - small talk is the devil - but I've come up with ways to get by..... Like thinking of a few topics that I can talk about that are interesting. So when I'm going to be around a bunch of non-dog people, I just think ahead of time about some non-dog topics, which make me sound more interesting and well-rounded. :)
