Just something I have been thinking about for a while now. I have helped out with 12 training classes (including puppy class, CGC, and basic ob classes) and the number of people with dogs from breeders/BYB/pet stores outweighs people with rescue dogs by a TON!

Of the 3 puppy classes I have helped out with, not one single puppy has come from a shelter/rescue. There have been a few (3 that I can think of right now) in the adult classes from shelter/rescue/found but the ratio isn't even close.

Now granted I know that looking at dogs from one trainer isn't a very good representation, but every dog at the daycare except one is from BYB or breeder. Most of the dogs that come for swims are the same.

Just wondering what it is like in your area. I was surprised at how uneven the numbers are.

Hmmm, through the Dane networks I know a lot of people who rescue... I think in the Denver area it's actually pretty common because people are really aware of it... I couldn't give you exact numbers though :( I might be way off...

In my area, there's a lot of people who got their dogs from rescue. There are also a lot of people who got dogs for free from their cousin's brother's neighbor who's dog had puppies, and a small percentage of people who actually got their dogs from a reputable breeder.

hardly anyone here rescues , I feel it is because honestly every rescue person i have met from 2 separate local rescues are batshit crazy and drive people away.

Like labeling a clearly hippo pit a french bulldog mix , and justifiyng it by saying well it is a mix. um no that is down right dangerous.

there are a few smaller rescues i have not dealt with i have heard good things about though. down here dog owners are generally an uneducated bunch , who just keep on doing the same things they have always done . ie. chain dogs badly , unfixed , unvac , just generally stuff that i am sure most would fix if the had some education on good dog care and low cost options.

Here most people either find their dogs after they've been abandoned, get puppies when their neighbors or whoever have an oops litter, or get a puppy from a BYB.

You DO see purebred dogs, but I'm betting that some of them are from a rescue, while the majority come from BYBs.

Kansas City I think should be commended for the rescue efforts here. Most of the people I know have a rescue dog. THe humane society does a great job of public education. With their fundraisers they are able to really spread the word.

some do.

based on the new pets we see at work, more cats are coming from the humane league or rescue than dogs, but there are some.

we see a LOT of small breed petstore puppies.

YES. At my dog park it is 10:1 rescue dogs at any given time you go. This area does a wonderful job with rescue. Even the purebred dogs are probably half from rescue.

In agility, the numbers are slightly less. I think people get addicted and feel they need to get a purebred dog in order to do well. The numbers are more like 60-70% rescues instead of the 90%+ at dog parks or festivals or day care.

My neighborhood specifically is not too big on rescue. Out of 10 dogs, 2 would be from a rescue or shelter, 7 will be from breeders (often breeders I would never recommend or go to), and 1 would probably be a pet store or puppy broker dog.

At the dog park and around the city, my experience has been that around, oh, 20-30% of the dogs were rescued or adopted. Luckily pet store puppies at least have become less and less common.

around here its pretty decent. We have good rescues and a few active shelters. It helps that the humane society is on a main street so its fresh in a lot of people's minds.

It's maybe 50-50 around here. I think it's gotten worse since the pet store opened in the mall. It's probably 70-30 breeder in agility - there's a lot more shelter dogs now that mixed breeds get to play too. There are a LOT of people around here getting insane sporter collies not because they actually like the breed but just because they think you must have an insane sporter collie to do well in agility... that sort of tips the scale. Some of them are coming from well-known people but still not somebody I would ever get a dog from... especially not after knowing the dogs. If you took that element out of it, it would probably be closer to 60-40. I don't think I know a single rescued BC running agility.

My agility class was probably about 70% rescued dogs. Our trainer - and a co-founder of the club - is heavily involved with BC rescue and has something like 5 rescued BCs she competes in agility with, so she's a big advocate of rescuing. And the city of Austin is extremely rescue-oriented from what I can tell, there are tons of rescue groups and the city is very dog-friendly so they're always promoting their adoptable dogs.

That's how it is in OK. All the bcs but one at our sports club came from the same breeder- a big name sports collie breeder. The other one is just into disc dog and is a really sweet little rescue bc. Ironically she's also one of only a few stable bcs in that club.

All in all in OK where I live there's not many rescues. There's not a single mixed breed dog in my neighborhood and I always thought that was weird.

Around here in Texas though there's a lot more rescues. Still more breeder dogs, I bet but there's a very large portion of the dog population that is rescues. And a lot more mutts too.

I would say the percentage around here is 80-90% rescue from talking to the people at the dog park. In our family my sister has two rescues, my brother has two rescue APBT's. My sister's husband before they were married has a lab from a breeder.

I'd say it leans ever so slightly to breeders around my neck of the woods.

I do see a fair amount of dogs that are from the shelter or a rescue, but I have seen a HUGE influx of "puppies from Kijiji" in the last year. Most recent was this (adorable!) Cavapoo (Cavalier x Poodle). And there are a lot of poorly bred ShihTzus, a lot of Goldendoodles, etc.

I'd say it is a 50-50 split, with rescue dogs having a bit of an upper hand. A lot of dogs that come in for boarding are rescues/shelter adoptees. I'd say the next big chunk are BYB, and then there are a very slight amount of dogs from reputable breeders. It seems like more people with little dogs purchase from BYBs, but the people with larger dogs rescue.

Big dogs are largely rescues and working breeders (shepherds, labs, border collies, aussies) with the rest are from bybs (we're a huge doodle area...). The purebreds from bybs are either Labs or GSDs or Golden Retrievers.

Small dogs are mostly from bybs... They're mostly the "southern alberta specials" aka Bichon Shihtzus and Buggs. Rarely will we get purebreds and if we do they're Chihuahuas, poorly bred JRTs and poorly bred Pugs.

Thanks for responding everybody!

I was surprised, I would have thought there would be more rescue out here. :/

I'd say when I worked in grooming out on Long Island, about 25% were rescues, most were byb and pet store puppies. Very few were from a good breeder.

Here in the city I'm not sure, but I see a lot more ads for rescuing than I do from breeders.
