I've been thinking pretty much exactly what this article says, just never expected a media outlet to say it.

Do laws even matter today? - USATODAY.com

Short read, but I think it covers where we are today. The law system is very arbitrary to those in power. I imagine it's always been to some degree, but it seems that now a days no one in power even gets so much as a wrist slap, much less real penalties.

I think this summarizes the issue best:
In each of these areas, the perception is that the law says one thing but actually means different things for different people. It is a dangerous perception, and it is not entirely unfounded. Such double-standards have become common as Congress and presidents seek to avoid unpopular legal problems.

there seems to be a growing sense among many citizens that they are expected to play by the rules while others are exempt.
Absolutely true statement IMO.

I agree, everything from bail outs, environmental damage caps for businesses, to privacy laws changed around..........we (citizens, little people, nobodies) do get screwed time and again while those in power/with money sail through unscathed.

Those who govern have become an aristocracy immune to their own laws. Our Congressmen are exempt from Obamacare. It seems like just a couple hundred years ago we fought a war over that.

Richard Pryor summed it up: "What I am for is justice for everyone, just like it says in the Constitution."

He also said, "You go to jail lookin' for justice, that's what you get: Just us."
