distilled water for dogs and birds?!? WTH

so, i had a few questions about my new lovebird that i got so i called a local bird place whom specialize in birds of all sorts, and i was asking them if there daytime was the same as my turtles and such, and he said yes, i a also asked if there was anything else i needed to know he said that i needed to make sure that i give her distilled water for them to drink and play in... he also said that it is better for them in the long run.. after talking with him for a while he also said that any pet you have should be drinking filtered water all the time, as it is better for there overall health and well being sooooo i called my dad and we are going to buy one of those water filter things for our sinks oh for the love of dogs LOL.. well, at least they will be drinking the best water in town.

Not sure that's true about dogs. They drank water from anywhere hundreds of years ago and lived perfectly healthy lives. Sometimes I think people (myself included) go a bit over board on some things.

lol LIz, i agree i mean i can see the lovebird because they are tropical birds. i think what we was trying to say was" i have this water here that needs to be sold and i will sell it to anyone who is a health nut" kinda thing... however, we are still going to get a filter system because our water is pretty gross.

Filterred water is different from distilled water. Distilled water is for radiaters and batteries, not for drinking.

I've never had anyone advise me to use distilled water for my lovebird.. wouldn't drink that myself so no way I'd give it to my bird. He gets regular tap water, but we do have very clean tap water here. I can imagine it would be an issue if your tap water isn't clean enough to drink though, cause tropical birds are a bit more delicate and can't as easily tolerate impurifications as other bigger animals.

I have heard that purified water is better for eyestains and smells on dogs who have those problems--but I haven't heard of any other benefits.

I give distilled water to my cats. Veterinarian's orders, due to my boy kitty being prone to cystitis (crystals in the urinary tract).

Filtered water is different, and the dogs get filtered much of the time, just because we have a filter on the sink. Besides, I'm pretty sure they don't need the chlorine any more than I do.

If I don't use filtered water, my dogs get the runs. I mistakening didn't do it in one house when I first moved, and the runs came back. I always use filtered water for them and us.
