I had heard about that one Australian guy who made that euthanasia machine, so I decided to look it up. One of the sites I came across had very detailed instructions about how to euthanize your pet at home. I almost threw up! That was so sickening! How could anyone euthanize their pet at home, without the supervision of a vet!? This is so disgusting! Any moron could kill an animal with those horrible instructions. I can't believe something like that was on the internet. I just had to rant about that. It was so disgusting.

Well to play devil's advocate, it's expensive to get your animal euthanized at a vet and then getting the body disposed of. It's illegal to take it home with you since you can't bury it in your yard (or you can't here) so you have to pay for disposal too. If you shoot the dog it's the cost of a bullet, the dog doesn't feel anything, and you can still bury the animal.

The original machine that I was looking up was created by an Australian doctor to euthanize people. An IV was attached to a lethal drug, with a laptop. The laptop would ask you several questions determining whether or not you really wanted to die, then if you were sure, it would administer the drug that would kill you. Only four people were able to use this before it was outlawed. The site that I saw with the animal euthanasia had instructions about how to make up some kind of a lethal gas, put your pet in a kennel with a bag on attached to the gas, then you would release the gas, thus killing your pet. It had pictures and everything. I don't think this is comparable with shooting your dog or anything like that. It was very disturbing. I don't really want to post the site since it was so disgusting. I'm not sure if I really explained it well though.
