Has anyone ever been to one of these?

this apparently started in France quite a while ago when as lore states friends that lived apart from each other found themselves in Paris they wanted to get together for a picnic/meeting and to recognize each other - they wore all white. Then it expanded into a more public event after that.
The local one is on thursday - my friend is going just for the sight of it - picture taking and all. I passed on an invite. I don't like crowds of people I don't know, I don't like wearing all white (makes me feel virgin suicide-y), I DON'T like the idea of setting up and taking down my own dining spot and bringing/cooking my own food for a night out, nor do I have enough friends whom would participate - the friend that is going is only going with two other people and I think if you're a single you have to sit amongst a group of strangers.
Will look forward to seeing photos of it though...
