Hi Everyone....

My mini schnauzer (13 weeks) does a little digging ritual right before he sleeps. When it's bed time, I put him in his bed/crate and sometimes on my bed (I put him back into his bed when he falls asleep), and he just digs & digs for about a minute or two and then stops, lays down, and sleeps. He does this every night right before he sleeps. He'll do his digging ritual on my bed, my pillow, his bed, his blankie....wherever I put him down for bedtime. And he digs so fast during that minute or so, I swear if I put some wooden sticks there, he can start a camp fire for me! It doesn't bother me that he digs before he sleeps, I think it's kind of cute. I was just wondering if this digging ritual is an individual thing or a general puppy thing. Is trying to fix his bed the way he wants it before he sleeps...is he looking for something....is he trying to leave his scent there? Has anyone expereince this with their mini schnauzer puppy?

Thanks!

Smokey does this about 25% of the time. She really looks irritated with the dog bed when she does it, like it doesn't conform to her idea of what it should be like. When she is finished, it usually has several lumps that she sleeps on as compared to a nice smooth surface before she starts.. Go figure.

I think that she is just trying to get comfy in her bed.

Riot does this sometimes on MY bed - he'll ruffle all the blakets up so its "comfy" for him and I'm left shivering on the other side lol

Yea yea! I have it all nice and smooth and he digs & digs...and he gets all messy....ruffles, lumps, and all. Then he goes to sleep! I have his fleece blankie all folded and nicely layed out on his bed and he makes it all messy by digging and then, sleepy time. Hmmm... But he is so cute! :D

She is just getting her bed ready to sleep the same way people do just that dogs do it by digging as if they were living outside

My 10 year old great dane does it. Not a frantic digging like that, but a slow, strong scratch, like she's moving stuff around on purpose (which I am sure she is!). Had a friend's son stay over at our house and he stayed in my room, where Sarah sleeps, while I was away -- I asked him if he slept okay, and he said "Yeah but Sarah got stuck in her blankets right before she went to bed so I had to rescue her!" LOL She wasn't stuck, just digging, but it sure sounded like stuck!

We had two mini schnauzers when I was a teenager, they are fun dogs. It's my guess he's telling you he wants you to get him a Sleep Number bed. Get on it!
