Did you ever ship your puppy/ies? I mean like from the breeder? My sisters friend did it with two long haired chihuahuas and they're gorgeous. I was wondering if anyone else has.. I'm lloking to buy a yorkie or chihuahua and I can't find a good breeder around here so I was thinking about shipping...

Try reading the sticky in the Health section about transporting puppies. What area are you in? Have you tried contacting members of the breed club? Sometimes you have to ask and find out by word-of-mouth. Some breeders will ship, but others will not. Personally, though, I'd like to meet the mom and the breeder in person before purchasing a pup.

Where are you located?

Have you checked http://www.petfinder.org?

Getting a pup from out of state is fine if you research your breeder carefully.

I personally am not too comfortable with the process of shipping a puppy. I live in Arizona and I got my puppy in North Carolina, but I flew out there myself to pick her up. It wasn't too much more expensive than shipping her alone, and the extra money was well worth it for the peace of mind and also for being able to meet her breeder, her dam and granddam, and her littermate.

A Chi or Yorkie puppy could easily be carried on a plane, you just have to notify the airline in advance and I think it's anywhere from $50 to $90 to carry a pet on.

I would never buy when I haven't seen the situation personally or know someone very well who has seen the kennel , pups etc . A lot of puppy mills have wonderful web sites .

Are you suggesting buying a puppy online and having it shipped to you?

Or are you thinking about flying to a specific breeder to see their stock before they choose the right dog for you?

I, like others, am not comfortable shipping a dog from breeder to new owner.

You can research your breeder/s in and out, but it's still not the safest thing to do IMO. Also, if you want a good quality pup you should be willing to drive some or fly.

My bulldog, Mona, was shipped to me from the breeder. She was not shipped in cargo, however. The breeder had a friend fly her out to me in cabin and it worked out nicely.

I was very apprehensive about buying a dog sight unseen, but was beyond pleased when I first met my bullie pup at the airport. She came out of the soft carrier with her bullie butt wiggling away. She was precious and exceeded my expectations!

With that said, you have to know how to screen the breeder, what to look for and how to check references properly before shipping a puppy...

I had my puppy shipped from CA to NY and it worked out pretty well. I had been in touch with the breeder over a period of several years and trusted her enough to buy the puppy without having met her or the parents. We waited until the puppy was almost 12 weeks. She actually drove to an airport two hours away (and I drove 4) so he could take a direct cross-country flight. It ended up being less than 5 hours for him and it was a red-eye. I think we made it as painless as it could possibly be for him. When he got off the plane he was pretty relaxed and in good spirits. So I think if you trust the breeder and choose a direct flight it should work out.

Either way.. the breeder that I am looking into I found from other people who have gotten their dog from.. I've talked to her and asked her questions and she answered all of them.. she said that when she can she flies down with the dog instead of just shiupping them.
