Today on Oprah they had a dog that was missing his front two legs. The dog basically hopped and stood upright like a human. I thought it was really disturbing and cruel. What did you guys think?

I did not see Oprah but I saw a very similar story on Montel and I think it may be the same dog. I did not see it as cruel, the dog would have been put to sleep the woman saved it and seems to really love it. She taught it to walk on its legs and she takes him to the vet frequently to check his hips. So if it is the same dog, I thought the woman was an amazing person for doing what she did.

I've seen this dog before. The lady who ownes her actually wrote a book called "With a little Faith" and the whole family seems really dedicated to her. They have had her hips checked and so far she's gotten a clean bill of health. I cry every time I see her, not because I feel pitty for her or think that she's being treated badly but I just think that she is so brave and a true testament to the spirit and soul of a dog.

No, I didn't see it. I guess I am glad I didn't.
I would be torn between.....real quality of life, the struggles the dog may face daily and the caring great home the dog is with.

I had a cat with three legs (for more than half her life) but she still walked somewhat normally. There is a big difference in two and three legs.
Sometime I will tell the trials that cat went thru, she is the same one that was bit by the copperhead. Plus many more bad luck things. But she lived until 21 years old. (sorry for off topic)

I have seen the dog and i think its great what her owners are doing for her personally.

My friend Anna has a two legged Daschund puppy who finally after almost of a month of precedures is home and starting to live a normal life. She lost both her back legs and now gets around with her wheely cart or is learning too. She seems not to even notice she is different.

I have seen dogs with the carts before, I think that is good.
At least they are walking level like nature intended. That wouldn't get to me near as much as seeing a dog having to walk upright on his two back legs.
But then again, I haven't seen the dog. I may look at the video if I get brave enough. Lol. But then again I have dial up. ;)

I do already know anyone to put that much effort in a dog must love him very much. And that can't be all wrong. :)

She really doesen't look too bad. Its cute to watch her lay down. Its a bit of a shocker at first because she kinda looks like an alien walking down the street with her owner lol. She was born this way which I think is anouther good thing for media to show what happens when people irresponsibly breed. Though some people might be dumb and want a dog who only has its hind legs  . Not that i wouldn't take in a dog like Faith but I wouldn't go out trying to find one. If you get my drift ;) .

It is very sad, but she does look very happy and content. Hat's off to the owners for taking the time and having the patience to train her. It seems like they're realy responsible. The lady said that she took her to the vet to have her hips checked because of the way that she walks.

I could see if the dog was missing the back legs and used a cart but I just cant get over it. There is a time when you have to say ok that is not fair to the animal. It would be very hard to put an animal down as I have never had to do this yet. This just seemed like something that was done for the humans feelings and not what was best for the animal. Did you see how the dog had to eat? How does this dog go to the bathrooms?

I've seen and heard of this dog. There was a thread about her a while ago. IMO yes maybe she will get hip problems, but at least she's not dead. And her owner easily scooped her up and held her in her arms. When the dog was on the ground, she hopped around happily, getting close to the audience. She was obviously happy.

I feel horrible, but I couldn't help but laugh at this dog when I saw her. It was the wierdest, but cutest thing ever!

This dog was born this way. It doesn't know any other way. During that entire video that dog was happy, tail wagging, and looked like it didn't know any better life a dog could have. I think the owner is doing a great job.

Do they have those cart/wheel things for front feet? Or just for dogs missing back legs?

The lady that owns her said that they tried to use a front support of some sort with wheels but that she kept hurting herself, so they helped her to develope her own way...so cute! I agree, she looks like a very happy little girl:)

Pixie... I too was going to mention that she was born this way, which to me makes a big difference... this is all she's ever known. I've seen her before and give kudos to the family for their dedication for her health. I feel if she had been an older dog who lost her front legs it would have been another story.

I was amazed at the way nature can help any person/animal adapt to a birth defect. she seems happy, and is very well cared for. as to issues of potty, I have to assume someone is there to support her front for her. the family is very committed to her care. she is such a sweetie. :) :)

It may seem weird, but I think it's awesome!!! I don't feel bad for the dog at all. The dog doesn't know that she's different, and look how many people are being proven wrong about disabled animals :) Maybe someone will watch that show and then realize that an animal can live a happy life even if it is different. I've seen that dog several times, and she seems happier with life than most people are. I think it's awesome that she is able to inspire so many people. Kudos to her owners also for giving her a chance, when most people would have given up. :)

I thought it was odd. I glad the owners are happy with what they've done, and the dog seems to be adjusted pretty well for only having 2 legs, but how does it got to the bathroom?? i'm sure it makes a mess.

and she/he was only 2-3 so it still has plenty of time to develope very bad hips. The biomechanics of a dog aren't for upright movement and causes odd and great stress at the hip joint. What are they going to do when the dog can't use its back legs either?

ALthough all of them seemed happy on the show, I never would have kept that dog alive. Call me cruel or whatever, but i'm not really one to keep a dog a live so I can feel better about myself. If the dog couldn't survive on its own, then it probably shouldn't. Just my feelings.
