Here's a short summary/timeline on the Diamond Dog Food recall as a sticky thread, so people can keep an eye on it.

Around mid of December 2005 rumors started floating around on various internet forums that there might be a possible problem with certain brands of Diamond dog food, since a number of dogs had gotten sick or even died.

On December 20th I talked to a customer service representative, who confirmed that aflatoxin had been found in tested samples of pet food of the "Diamond" line containing corn, which were manufactured at the Gaston, South Carolina plant.

Later on that day Diamond released a media statement with details about the contamination problem and on which products exactly were affected.

On December 21st, Diamond released a detailed recall notice.

On December 30th 2005, the FDA posted a statement that some of the product subject to a company recall had been exported to at least 29 countries, including countries within the European Union. To date, FDA’s Center for Veterinary Medicine had received reports from four States of 41 dogs becoming ill reportedly from consumption of the contaminated pet food, with 23 of these dogs having died.

Despite rumors being spread on various internet forums, the Chicken Soup for the Pet Lover's Soul line of foods is not affected by the recall and safe to feed.

I received this e-mail from my vet's office today...

We are all saddened by the deaths of dogs related to the contamination of dog food produced by Diamond Pet Foods. According to the Food and Drug Administration, dozens of dogs have died or become ill after eating Diamond Pet Food products contaminated with aflatoxin. Our hearts go out to those dog owners who lost their companions because of this tragic situation.

On Wednesday, January 11, 2006, Diamond Pet Foods announced that they had identified the contaminated batches produced in the Gaston, South Carolina plant.

The ONLY brands affected are Diamond Maintenance Dog and Diamond Premium Adult Dog with these "Best By" dates: April 3, April 4, April 5, and April 11, 2007.

According to the company, this information has been confirmed by tests of more than 2,700 samples conducted by independent laboratories.

For more information, telephone Diamond's toll-free Customer Information Center at (866) 214-6945 or visit Diamond's pet food recall website: http://www.diamondpetrecall.net/updates.html

Dogs who have eaten contaminated food may exhibit the following signs:

* Loss of appetite
* Yellow whites of the eyes, yellow gums, yellow in the belly or areas where hair is very thin
* Severe, persistent vomiting combined with bloody diarrhea
* Discolored urine
* Fever

Its so sad... And really scary.
