Hi! i'm getting a new pup in a few days, we found her by contacting some folks who'd advertised on petfinder classifieds, about some other rescues they had, which we decided weren't for us. However, they had a litter of pups, I don't think they're breeding them ,just sort of happened with all the animals going through- she's a chihauha pekingese mix- we thought she was so cute, and she's ours now- what we didn't know when we chose her was that she'd be considered a "designer dog" b/c we looked online for info on our breed(s) of pup, and found lots of people breeding and selling this type for a LOT of money!
Kind of strange for us, commited mutt owners ( our 10 year old must be some sort of designer, maybe about 200 breeds mixed up...;) )
Just thought I'd share how we unintentionally now own a designer mix.... I don't know, it sounds kind of like an oxymoron, designer mix...
I kind of love the surprise uniqueness that comes with a mutt, but in our search for a new dog, it seemed as if there were no longer any "mutts" left to adopt, just designer mixes!
Not complaining at all, love our new little cutie...:D :D :D

I personally would rather adopt from a local HS or rescue.... but I know you'll love your baby. Will you be able to see her .... or is it long distance ?

well, local shelters were our first choice, we'd already found our 1st mutt that way- but for this one, we wanted to rescue or adopt, which this is, but we were looking more for a definite type of dog, and there were none in that category in our state! pretty broad category, small being the first criteria.... So we had to head to the next state over, we met the people, and saw all the animals they are rescuing and finding homes for, and were satisfied that we weren't perpetuating a puppy mill situation- Since we chose her, a few animals that would've been good options have come into view, we just thought it was funny the way things turned out. Looking at shelter dogs is so difficult, they have these soulful eyes, and they seem to understand they're not in a good place.... It made me tempted to buy a 100 acre farm and adopt 50 dogs!

Congrats on the puppy! Just be warned, though; you may get the occasional cranky glance from people who will suspect you paid $1200 for her.
I suspect that small genuine mutts - as opposed to deliberate 'designer' dogs - may be in the decline. It's usually easier to contain and control small dogs, so the careless owner scenario - dog gets free, breeds at own discretion - is less likely. Plus, of course, there's the huge prices you can apparently get for a small mixed-breed puppy.

You can't compare the value of a mixed dog to a true breed when it's strictly a pet and not a show dog.

i sure can :) yoshi's been my best friend since i got her. i've cared for her and had to get her well again after being poorly cared for. to me and many people who know yoshi they know that she's worth ATLEAST if not more than a pure breed dog. she knows her commands, is great at fetch and frisbee, is an awesome swimmer is great with kids and all other animals. to some people showing dogs is a hobby or a way of life, well yoshi IS my life :p and to me her value is waaaay more than any pure breed dog out there
