About the attachments though, how does it work? It's so odd to me that they could put something on your teeth without damaging them.
You mean like gluing individual brace brackets to teeth and tightening wires held between them? :rofl1:

Invisalign is so much less invasive, I wish I had the option when I had orthodontic work done. From what I understand, the change of aligner pain isn't quite as bad as tightening-braces pain.

Oddly enough I'm the only one in my family who didn't need braces. Yessssss. When I got my wisdom teeth taken out, the doctor was like "Wow, you have very straight teeth." WHY THANK YOU SIR. At least I got something. ;P

So lucky!

I actually only have one wisdom tooth. It's wayyy up there too. Nobody has ever mentioned anything to me about getting it out, so I dunno, hope I don't have to.

I only had two! The upper two. Actually getting my wisdom teeth out was like, no big deal. I went and they were like "okay so we're going to put you under" and I was like "NOPE." I had been told they'd just twilight me, but they wanted to use general. NOPE NOPE NOPE. So they just numbed me and went to work. It was like... five minutes. There was no point to even do the general, I have NO idea why they thought they needed to. Mine were breaking through the gums so it wasn't like they had to cut in or anything, they just hooked in and pulled 'em out.

They did tell me there was a chance they wouldn't have to come out, but once they started breaking through the gums, holy balls, that was painful. I was like "Is this what small children feel like when they're teething? And they have no concept of what's happening? THIS IS HORRIBLE."

I needed braces (my mouth is tiny and teeth were kind of jammed up) but I don't have wisdom teeth! Which I kept getting told is a REALLY GOOD THING, because I likely would have needed braces again after getting them removed. Literally NO ROOM.

I only have the top ones too but they're severely impacted so they told me it would be more work... so they gave me the choice between local and general anesthesia. I picked general because I'm chicken. Plus he told me they are very close to my sinuses and they might nip them in the process so yeah... chicken.

They wouldn't even start Invisalign before I have them out, as they are pushing on my teeth anyway (which is odd I guess, if they were pushing that much, I wouldn't have all that extra space between my teeth, but whatever).

Not really looking forward to it to be honest, but you got to do what you got to do. Can't be worse than my nose surgery two years ago I guess, although eating mushy foods is going to suck as I'm counting calories and eating ice cream for 3 days is not an option.

I have had a lot of dental work done. I have had 3 root canals and of course they told me to eventually get a crown. Well I couldn't afford crowns so all 3 of those teeth ended up cracking and I had to have them extracted. Never again will I have a root canal because I can't afford $500 for a crown.

If anything I'll have the tooth pulled. The last one I had pulled which was on the bottom right.. I ended up getting a really bad dry socket. That hurt worse than the extraction. I didn't know why I was hurting so much but I did look up symptoms on the internet.

I had the whitish bone showing that should have never been there, a god awful nasty taste in my mouth and a huge hole. Of course the pain happened on the weekend so I had to put an ice pack on my face but it didn't help and meds helped for 2 hours tops. I couldn't sleep at all. I have never been so glad to see a Monday in my life. I had it packed twice once for a day and I had to had it changed the next day. Then kept in for a week and taken out.

This happened around Thanksgiving last year. We went to Red Robin out of town to pick up my brother and his dog so they could be here for Thanksgiving and I was upset because the food was good but I still tasted the stuff from the pack as my dry socket was still packed with gauze and medicine.

I won't have another root canal if I am told that I need one I won't bother because I will never be able to afford a crown. Those teeth could have been saved if I had not got a root canal. I do need to go for a cleaning now as I am due. Sorry that was long.

Oh, GOD yes. I had all four of mine come through at around the same time. It was horrible. The bottom two kept cutting into my cheek when I'd chew, and the upper two were starting to come in crooked or something, so they ended up taking them all out, praise the Lord. They just gave me some happy gas and I woke up with them out. Hooray for happy gas! My recovery was pretty uneventful, too, and I didn't even need the pain pills the prescribed me.

Ugh, I had to have my wisdom teeth out before I could have my jaw surgery, so I had mine out way before anyone else I knew, and way before there was any (other) reason to do it. They pretty much had to go mining through my gums to get them. I think I was 12 or 13. I woke up during the extraction and think I am still traumatized from that! I swear the wisdom teeth were worse than the jaw surgery for me - or maybe it is just that I was super out of it following the jaw surgery and had a little button that shot morphine into me then ;)

I do not envy you guys. I went to the dentist a year ago for the first time in 7 years. I've never had any fillings or anything, I did have my wisdom teeth removed at age 14 and that was awful.

I don't mind going to the dentist, getting cleanings and stuff, but I would go insane if I had to go that often!!

???? Getting a dental cleaning every 6 months is the normal recommendation, not going for 7 years is not 'normal'. I don't have issues with my teeth but have never missed a 6 month cleaning.

Yeah last time I didn't go for 3 years (we moved, and I got lazy), I ended up with 6 cavities and I had to have special treatments to remove bacteria in my gums. It wasn't pretty...

And the time before that, when we didn't have dental insurance, one of my teeth broke...

I had my wisdom teeth out at 19 and I got dry sockets. That sucked but my last extraction was worse with the dry socket. I hope I don't need any more teeth pulled ever.

You would always need a crown after a root canal -- I would think your dentist would have told you of this? I needed a crown just now and didn't get a root canal -- it was just a super deep filling. But still needed the crown. You shouldn't really go more than 3-5 weeks with a temporary crown. They're made to be... well... temporary, lol, so they definitely WILL crack. I dunno how your teeth could've been saved w/o a root canal? If the dentist felt it warranted one, your only other option would've been get them pulled and get an implant or a bridge, etc? The good thing is the permanent crowns that are specifically made for you should ideally last you forever, or at least a REALLY long time. My dentist said his mother had one in 1951 and didn't need it replaced until 1985 and those were the older crowns. Nowadays they're made great. No more metal mouth! lol. So it's not like they're not worth the cost technically speaking.

I was sooo glad to get the temporary crown off - I don't know how people wait for a year sometimes or more with temps! The glue stuff bothered me and I couldn't eat on that side. But I paid for it in advance with Care Credit so the crown was already paid for. My mom has gotten root canals and stuff and then waited a year or more to get the permanent crown and made it worse.

My total ended up being around $2000 for like 5 fillings and one crown. Which is like $169/month I believe, interest free. I'm probably going to do the bleaching for $250 too after my invisalign, or they said I could use the invisalign trays as bleaching trays.

I heard dry socket is TERRIBLE btw, I so feel for you.

Oh, I didn't mean I'd go insane going every 6 months, just that I'd go insane having to go get fillings and root canals and all that. I hadn't gone for 7 years for lack of insurance, and when I went, the dentist asked me what I do to keep my teeth so clean. He said the reason most people need to go so often is because of their diet or not knowing proper cleaning techniques. Also, cavities heal on their own if you let them (but not if they're filled). So at this point I think going every 6 months is kind of a scam.

Yes he told me I would need crowns but that was after the root canals were done not before they were done so I wasn't warned. I didn't know they were so expensive. I can't afford $500 per crown.

I think you need a new dentist, lol, that would have pissed me off! But I don't like going to my regular dentist for root canals anyway, I'd prefer the endodonist who does it day in and day out and really knows what they're doing.

Some people just have good genetics. It's not always about proper technique/diet or care. My whole moms side of the family has always had teeth issues. I think the dentist described it as 'soft teeth' or something. I don't know. But my uncle was super paranoid about his teeth and took amazing care of them and he still ended up needing veneers. My grandpa needed dentures in his 40s. And then my dad like hardly ever even flosses and he's only ever had 1 root canal. Go figure.

But I definitely think in today's society, diet plays a huge roll. Soooo much sugar in our foods. But I don't mind going every 6 months when I remember lol. I think even once a year would suffice for most people. I don't really think it's a scam. There's nothing wrong with being up on being preventive. I paid $55 for my first visit at my current dentist for x-rays and a cleaning. After that, I think it's like $130 regularly w/o insurance.

Well that's what I am working on. I was super pissed after I got tooth extracted last year and ended up with a dry socket any way with a supposedly "great" oral surgeon. Oh he never did my root canal.. I was referred to a endodonist once. But my old dentist before this guy did 2 root canals and he wasn't even supposed to do them.

Then I was referred to an endodonist that did an amazing job. I felt no pain and had no pain afterward. But the dentist I am not going to any more is a jerk. I'm definitely working on getting a new dentist because I'd like to keep the rest of my teeth thank you very much.

I think dry socket can happen anytime really... it's just when the clot is removed and the bone is exposed, right? That could be because you ate something it didn't agree with... anything really. Not sure the surgeon can really do anything to avoid it.

Like, from what I've read, no sucking (on a straw, you dirty minded people) or eating any hot food for a few days after as it can dislodge the clot. I'm still trying to figure out what I'm going to be able to eat without starving or going way over my calorie goal.
