My dogs have eaten alot of raw deer bones and meat.
But...... Since CWD has been found in my area I "try" to limit the goodies
they get. I guess I am just parinoid. Lol
No glands...brain....or neck meat for my dogs....but that is just MO.
Even though it has not been proven to be passed to humans or dogs, I just am overly concerned. :)

All I can say is you are lucky! Feed it! My brother hunts and I can't seem to get him to remember to save parts for me.

Don't deer have hollow bones like chickens?? I mean the average weight is only 150-200lbs full grown correct. This would have to mean they are hollow!!

Lizzie and Major have had cooked deer meat before! :)

Actually we ran out of food that day and we were going the next day to get the food and so we made them two meals with deer meat, and some veggies!

They loved it! :p

I have a friend who gets a deer every winter from his dad who hunts, and I can't wait until he gets it this year. I'm going to have some really happy puppies :D

My brother just called, he got a big buck today. I reminded him on Thanksgiving about saving parts for me- he's got 30lbs of neck, shoulder, and ribs, and more to come.

I thought I have heard that raw meat has to be frozen for a certain period of time before feeding it. Is this true?

Just wondering because a friend of hubbys has plenty of deer parts and am thinking of feeding them some.

Also, they have never had any raw meat. Any suggestions for their first meal?

I froze the 30lbs of deer I got simply because I already had a few days worth of food already thawed for them, so I packed it up and froze it. While I was cutting it up, I threw them scraps. I don't see any reason why it needs to be frozen, just like for me, if I was cooking a deer steak medium rare, I wouldn't worry about freezing it 1st.

J's crew, before you start anything, do some research. www.rawlearning.com is a good site to get info.

Ok, thanks. My ultimate goal is to go completely raw. I know that I have a TON to learn though so I am taking it slow. Thanks for the link. :)

Ok, last night I gave them a few more chunks of raw deer. 3 of them seem to be handling it well, no upset stomach or anything. One of them though, a few hours after eating it had the loudest crazy noises coming from his belly. It was so loud I could hear it from another room. Anyone know why? I guess I shouldn't feed him raw anymore? Are there some dogs that just don't do good on raw?

TIA

J's Crew- you really need to read up on how to approach this and not do it haphazardly. You shouldn't be starting your dogs out on a raw diet by feeding deer muscle meat, it's very rich. Many dogs will take a while before they can get used to red meat like beef or deer.

The noises you hear are pretty normal. Mine make those noises from time to time too, just like we humans have growling bellies sometimes. It's certainly not an indicator that your dog is not suited to the diet.

The things I'd look for if your dog was not taking to the diet would be-vomiting up every meal, prolonged loose stools, prolonged lack of interest in the food you offer. It's totally normal for them to get loose stools for a couple days once you start them on the diet, but after a few days of getting a SINGLE source of raw meaty bones (read:chicken leg quarters!), it should stop. I think my 3 had the runs for 2 days tops, then they were fine. Vomiting all the time is not normal, nor is refusing to eat for days on end. Vomiting once in a while- normal. Vomiting up little pieces of bone- normal. Last night Gunnar vomited up most of his dinner of deer ribs and beef heart, then proceeded to re-eat it. Gross, but thats how it goes sometimes.

Please, do yourself and your dog a favor, and do some reading on how to get going on this diet before you start.

Ok, thanks for your help. I really am going to start doing some more research.

So do you think before I switch to raw (and get educated on it) I shouldn't be feeding them any, even just small amounts as treats? I have about ten pounds right now. Maybe I should just keep it in the freezer until I go all the way?

Also, what's your opinion on feeding kibble in the morning and raw in the evening? Once I know all the ins and outs of raw feeding that is....
