Dear lord, Reggins first DOG FIGHT.

I took off for a walk earlier, because I feel bad for cooping reggin in the house all the time. He's a terrier... he NEEDS exercise. He is a year old now, and after this, I think his DA is kicking in like no other.

I was sticking to the main roads to avoid other dogs, but as soon as a venture into a neighborhood just a little bit, I see 2 dogs set their eyes on us and start running over. They were WAY down the road. I have nowhere to go, but to brace myself for what was about to go down. I was shaking in my boots. 2 against one! Reggin is a DEAD doggie! :(

One looked to be a male pit bull mix and the other was a female rottweiler mix. All I could think was F*CK!! THE SH!T IS ABOUT TO HIT THE FAN. Luckily all they wanted to do was sniff Reggin everywhere. Reggin has always been terrified of other dogs, so... with tail tucked, he starts jumping backwards. And the male dog insists on pestering Reggin, so Reggin goes on the defense.

Reggin nips the other dog in the face. That turned into a 2 second scrap, and the other dog backed off.

I start trying to walk Reggin off, because something bad is going to happen. The pit mix decides he wants to pester him again. Reggin getts pissed and an all out dog fight breaks out. And I just let Reggin go at it and dig in, because I am just PISSED. It didn't take long before the two dogs run off back home. Reggin jumps to the end of the leash to chase.

3 teen girls witnessed this whole thing. I think they knew the dogs, because I heard them yell at the dogs to go back home. Hopefully they tell the owners to keep their dogs up for their friggin safety.

I know the feeling . . . . twists your guts up in a knot, doesn't it?

There was a black Lab mix that chased Bimmer when Bimmer was still less than a year old. One day, I watched as Bimmer ran down the hill, howling. I don't know what had happened, but instead of the black Lab mix chasing Bimmer, the BLM and the other four dogs that ran in a pack with him squealed and took off in five different directions.

Things were never the same on the hill . . .

Sometimes our little dogs are bigger on the inside than anyone reckons ;) Still scares the hell out of you when something happens though.

Grrr.....
I would have been screaming profanities at the dogs and throwing kicks, personally...

At least he's okay, and the girls who witnessed it (rightfully) blame the other dogs... It could have been much worse!!

I was pretty much shaking uncontrollably. One dog coming at us is bad enough, but two!!! I am just glad they backed off when Reggy got mad, and didnt gang up on him.

I am glad that I can at least say reggin was on a leash! Part of the reason why I let Reggin go at it until the dog backed off. Nothing else I could have done anyway.

If you ever see then again I'd ask to see if anyone knows who the dog belongs to. I wouldn't hesitate to go holler at an owner about it if it's a repetitive thing.

I hate that feeling, Buster's only really bad fight was with a staffy mix that must have been twice his size. I still can't believe he held his own.

Then things happen like another staffy that bolted up to him, I braced myself. I had Mac aswell so I was a bit worried about her. Buster puffed up, no out of control agro as usual. It ran up, stood there, he quickly half snapped at its face and it ran home. God the relief

(((((((HUGS)))))))) because it sounds like you need them after this.

PLEASE bring something with you to beat the **** out of them next time, okay? I would suggest a baseball bat or something similar, if you see nothing in your house, those metal tubes that come with vacuums work fine.

Well, he may *not* be DA, necessarily. I think Reggin may have been simply protecting himself and telling the other dog to f*ck off, and when the dog wouldn't, he did what he had to do.
A dog aggressive dog is going to kill other dogs if given the opportunity. DA dogs cannot simply even look at another dog without freakin' out or going into the "zone". This is Ella.

I think Reggin was defending himself.

Carry your cell phone with you and have AC's number programmed in.

If you know that loose dogs are an issue in your neighborhood (I think you've mentioned that before), then carry something to keep your dog safe. You're VERY lucky that those dogs were not aggressive. If they had been, Reggin would probably not be with you right now.

Did you feed him extra for winning? :)

Gunnar has never had to fight luckily. One time we were getting ready to do some protection work at a guys house, I had Gunnar on leash and was walking him out by the road, when these 2 big labs came running over with aggressive postures and not so friendly barking. They got about 10' away, Gunnar gave his best big boy warning bark, lunged out to the end of the leash, and the 2 dogs took off.

I don't think that you can flatout say that his DA is kicking in full throttle now either. T-Bone is great with other dogs... however, if we encounter a loose dog on a walk, the situation is changed. It is a lot different if you have two dogs meeting each other in a backyard is a lot different than a leashed dog meeting a lose dog in the street. You were anxious and panicking and sending those vibes down the leash directly yo Reggin, so not only you are freaking out, but he is, too.

I would never, ever, ever, ever leave my house without anything with me to fight off roaming dogs if I can't leave a situation. Never ever. It doesn't matter when or where I walk. And I can't stress that enough.

Wow.. I'm so sorry. Definitely take something with you next time. Bamm had a rough encounter with two offleash dobermans a little while back. I ended up kicking one of the other dogs pretty hard to try and get them off my dog. Luckily Bamm wasn't injured... but it in no way helped Bamm with his confidence around other dogs. I was irritated and the owner came running to get his dogs. You can bet he got an earful.

((((((hugs))))))) for you - I know the feeling, and I hate the panicky-shaking that comes with it!

Do you carry anything to deter dogs that are not on a lead? For the longest time I did not, but now I carry a water bottle that I can squirt them with. I only put water in there (right now) and it has worked - though I've only had once incident since carrying it. I use the handle and hook it in my pocket, and continue on my walk as usual.
Just a thought ;)

((((HUGS)))) to you AND Reggin.

I KNOW how scary that is, and it's never any less scary with the number of dogs or their size.

I NEVER leave on a walk without my special metal walking stick. And I don't wait to see if the dog is friendly or not, if they come running I hit the ground with my stick and tell them to back off right away. If they are running loose that is all the information I need to know.

Glad all went okay. That's one thing I miss about living in CT; we could walk our dogs. Here in TN there are too many running loose and no one cares.

I think you will find, Barb, that other dogs will be more than happy to leave Max, Kona and Jake alone ;) There aren't many who are loose here - the neighbor who has her white GSD and ChowX in a yard with only a three sided fence is the only one, really, and they are the most obnoxious dogs around, but even together they don't want to annoy Kharma past a certain point. What they don't know, lol, is that her fuse gets progressively shorter with each irritation. ;)

Call animal control and hound them. These types of incidents have to be reported!

And if it were me, I'd be asking around to find out where the dogs live. Not because I would necessarily approach the owner myself (which I probably would), but so I could give the address to AC.
