I went to Target earlier today to pick up a few things, primarily some DayQuil for my husband since he has a cold. Also, Target is also the only convenient place I know of to get my favorite carpet cleaner (Spot Shot), so I got 4 cans, as well as a few other various things for my daughter. When the cashier asked for my ID she saw the look on my face and said it was for the cold meds. She got a little flustered when I started asking her questions about why I would be ID'd for that. On my way home I was thinking about it and wondered if it had anything to do with buying the carpet cleaner too since I've seen movies and whatnot with people getting flagged for buying certain ingredients that can be combined to make bombs or drugs or something.

Are these items ingredients used in something, or is it standard to ID people for buying cold medication now?

I THINK it's because someone, somewhere, found a way to make drugs from cold medicine. On the other hand, it could just be one more Big Brother move. Hard to tell any more.

It's because of the cold medicine. You can do something, extract or refine it or something, to make methamphetamine's.

Cold medicine with pseudoephedrine is used to make meth, hence the carding, though I'm not sure how carding does anything lol.

They also won't allow you to purchase more than a certain amount within a certain time period. Though if the companies aren't putting all of this in a database religiously, and accessing the database to see if your name comes up flagged, it's a bit ridiculous.

For the laws here (not sure if it's national or state wide) Pseudophederine products now require ID and logged. Because people do make Meth out of it. Usually it's input into a computer database (though it use to just be written down which didn't help). Suprisingly enough it does flag customers who buy too much of it. So it does work sometimes. I'm not sure if each company has their own database or if it's a state-wide or national database.

You have a limit you can buy every three days and every month, though unless you use it every day or one person tries to buy it for more than 3-4 people, it's very doubtful you'll go over the limit. Though if you get a prescription for it those regulations don't really apply, but insurance probably won't pay for it so it's more expensive.

Yeah she told me it was because of the cold meds, she just couldn't say why it required an ID. I just found it odd since I'd never been asked for ID for cold meds before. No biggie in the end, I just found it peculiar.

Maybe it was the combo of the cold meds and carpet cleaner together. Maybe we've just discovered some super secret drug cocktail! Either way, lame. :/

there was a story here not long ago of a woman who bought herself some cold medcine and the next day stopped somewhere else and bought some for her grown daughter. she was arrested and has a charge against her. i am trying to find the article now.

here is the link to the database that all your info is stored in everytime you have to show id for cold meds.

Oh...no worries. It's just Uncle Sam, up to his old tricks... practicing medicine again without a license, controlling how much cold medicine you buy. Who needs a doctor? They just want to keep you safe, that's all.... That gal who got arrested...since she and her daughter both had colds, that was "evidence" that she was manufacturing drugs. That's all they need, ya know...We all neeeeeeeed our Uncle Sam to keep us safe and secure.

I'm not sure why they'd card you for DayQuil as it has no psudeophedrine in it.
Because the people laying down the "law" are stupid/lazy/uneducated/vaguely aware that they are supposed to be doing something but not really sure what that is. Or, of course, all of the above.

Then refuse? The only law I am aware of is for pseudoephedrine and cough syrup with codeine in it, which you can only buy at the pharmacy counter and must show a drivers license.

Oh, wow. I thought that was common knowledge. They always card for cold medicine. People use it and other ingredients to make meth. They card you b/c you cannot buy it if you are under 18 and they limit the amount you can buy from that store in a certain amount of time.

They also card for cough drops and spray paint. You can't buy those either if you are under 18. Although I have only been carded once with spray paint.

Edit: I guess you can't make meth with Dayquil, who knew?! lol. Anyway, here they card for most any medications. Especially cough syrups. I was shocked to be turned away when I was 17 with a cold trying to pick up cough DROPS on my way to school!

How long has this been going on though? Are they carding everyone, or just those that look under a certain age? I've always been told I look younger than I am, but there is no way I look under 18. I have never in my life been carded for buying meds.

None of it really matters in the end, my curiosity has just gotten the better of me.
