Mom's Dachshund has slipped disc in back...vet wants to do surgery, but mom is exploring alternative measures that might work better in the long run and heal better than the surgery.

Do any of you have any suggestions, stories, experience with any of this? Can any of you offer any advice, please?

Mom also wants to speak with Holistic Vet- any referrals for San Martin, CA area?

Surgery is scheduled for tomorrow ( Thursday ) so time is of the essence, thank you!

Replies appreciated, thank you so much!

UPDATE-

My mom writes:

Just got back from getting Pee Wee's MRI. One thoracic slipped disk and two others that are deteriorating. He's lost 90% use of his back legs so surgery is indicated ASAP, otherwise it goes from this to complete paralysis and thus no chance for repair.

We actually ended up with a holistic neurosurgeon who supports acupuncture up to a certain level of deterioration. After that it's fastforward to surgery before the worst happens.

Had we been more proactive (or known how bad it was) we could have done something completely different. Oh well. We have another weiner
(their other dachsund, Noodles) to be more proactive with. Lucky guy.

Surgery is usually recommended, we have one who healed without it though, and regained the use of his legs.
Apparently being in a cart tends to stretch things back apart (he came to us paralyzed and too late for the surgery window).
Either way, after 4 mos. in a cart he started walking again. It's not the same as a dog with no back trouble but it gets him around!
