Sunday I noticed my dog had a s light limp and was licking her paw. I looked at it and there is a cut on the very bottom (possibly from broken glass). She barely limps on it now, only occasionally when we go for a longer walk, and can run/jump with the other puppy all day and shows no signs of pain. I was thinking about putting some kind of disenfectant on it to kill any of the germs (I cant think of the name of it but the kidn everyone uses when you get a scrap, kinda stings) and then some neosporin or something. Since she isnt limping around all the time in pain im really tryin to avoid the outrageous vet visit fees just for the vet to tell me to put ointment or a bandage on it. However, I dont want to risk it getting infected (if its even possible). Any opinions on what I sh ould do, or has anyone been in a similar situation with a cut on their dogs paw?? THANKS!

Same thing happened to Smokey when I first got her. A trip to the vet and some antibiotics, and the vet making sure there wasn;t anything still in the foot pad and she is alright. Take your dog to the vet. A foot infection is a bad thing for a dog.

I usually flush it out with hydrogen peroxide, then pour Betadine in the cut. If it's gaping, I use the GEL FORMULA of superglue, holding the wound together and applying it carefully over the top, then holding it together long enough for the glue to dry. My vet taught me that trick ;)

Just keep tabs on it. If the area seems to be warmer than the rest of the foot, that's an indication of infection. And don't worry if your dog is licking the wound. Dog saliva is an excellent antibacterial.

It doesent appear whatever caused it is still in there that i can see but she goes to the vet in a few days to get her stitches out from her spay anyway so i will make a point of asking.

I agree with Renee .... I've had many over the years ... some needed stitches , some just cleaning and watching . This was before the glue treatment . After a thorough cleansing and antibotic just make sure the area is kept free of dirt etc .... sock and plastic bag . Any heat is vet time !!!
