i decided to run a general wellness profile on my dog's urine and blood last week...while i was gone on a trip this past weekend, my vet called my mother and told her that my dog has crystals in his urine, but the vet told her that she's not worried about it but will look into it more.

twinkie's a 5 year old neutered cavalier, and he's eating a combination of fromm chicken and eagle pack lamb and rice.

his urination has been pretty normal - no asking to go out all the time, blood, etc...

should i be worried about this? i'm going to talk to my vet tommorrow when i go to work, but i was just wondering everyone's input.

when i took him to collect his blood and urine, i do know he hadn't drinken any water all day because he was nervous about staying at the vet's (cause i had him there all day since i work there) and his urine seemed pretty concentrated (note again that he hadn't drinken ANY water all day)

i'm freaking out just a little about this, like i usually do when i think there's something wrong with twinkie...

Is this some kind of kidney stone that's breaking up and coming out in the urine? I didn't know dogs suffered from things like this. Maybe he's not drinking enough in general...

There are different kinds of crystals - do you know what kind were found?

Your veterinarian will probably recommend rechecking a urinalysis, and possibly x-raying for bladder stones if things don't clear up. There are also prescription foods that can be utilized.

Good luck, keep us posted.

Definatly find out what kinds of crystals it is. As far as his urine being concentrated and collecting it. Most vets will ask that you collect it during the first pee of the day because thats when its most concetrated. Thats when they will normally see anything. Do you float his food with water? That is what most dal people do who feed kibble. I would definatly talk to your vet about it. After things get settled back down at home, I would have him rechecked for crystals. Hope all turns out well, stones and/or crystals are not a fun thing in male dogs.

took in another sample of twinkie's pee(first pee of the morning) today to my vet. ran an in house UA (did the urine strip and looked at a slide under the microscope) my vet told me that everything looks beautiful (pH is great, it was 7-7.5) and that the crystals probably just formed because we had to ship the sample to Idexx and it was sitting in a box for about a day.

my vet told me that the slide looked completely normal, and that his test results from idexx were perfectly fine too :)

King has had this since day one. I saw it right after he got the "He's in great shape" verdict from the vet after I took him in and they drew blood. His urine is very potent, bright yellow, and will eat metal up, and the grass if it's not watered, but his last blood work came back "Perfect", so I'm not concerned, since he's been, by far, the healhiest dog I've ever had..The vet said he would have probably had problems by now, and peeing is hardly a problem.

When he pees on concrete, there are a bunch of crystals left over when it dries, bright yellow like some kind of crushed sugar candy.
