It's a freaking GORGEOUS day outside but I feel like I'm being barricaded inside due to the heat. It's downright oppressive here lately. In Dallas over the weekend it was 100 with an index of 113, but at least that was a dry heat so it wasn't bad at all. Here it's 99 with an index of 105, but tack on humidity to it.

If you look at the weather chart, it's all centralized over Texas. What gives?

Oh well. At least it's hot. Rather be hot than cold. It's quite the stifling kind of hot though.

Everything's bigger/better in Texas? IDK! hahaha, but this has been one hot summer here in N Indiana as well! Right now, at 7:43 pm it's STILL 85 with a 'feels like' of 92 and 69% humidity!

Just noticed the original post's picture changes, so now late comers have no idea what I'm talking about.

It's 10:00 PM CST, 91*, and 63% humidity. You'll even sweat your balls off drinking on the back porch (though granted the alcohol doesn't help).

It is 82 here now at 10 30 pm with high humidity. Taking the dogs for their walk was like walking bath water. Stinky bath water. Leaves are turning yellow and you can see half inch cracks in the soil. We are desperate for rain.

I am Canadian. I am made for the cold, not the hot. So this stupid hot weather that has been breaking records left right and sideways? Yah, you can all have it back. 99 is nothing ;)

A few weeks ago, we had a 2 weeks of 113, with "feels like" of 120+, thanks to humidity and index and such. It has cooled down a bit, but not enough. Even the rain storms we have been having have not cooled it down.

Ok, so, it kinda irritates me when people say, "but it's a dry heat."

"Heat index" is the temperature that it feels like outside, with the temperature combined with the humidity. Higher humidity makes it feel hotter outside because sweat doesn't evaporate from our skin as fast, which is why high humidity makes the heat index - the "feels like" temperature - higher.

So, 100 degrees with a heat index of 113 means that it feels like 113 outside. 99 degrees with a heat index of 105 means that it feels like 105 outside. Assuming your figures are all correct, it was more humid in Dallas, AND it felt hotter as well.

Last summer our temperatures hit 108, while at my Mom's house in AL the heat index was right at 100. Yes, the humidity in AL was higher, but it did feel hotter here in TX even though it was a dry heat.

The only thing that doesn't get calculated that probably should, is the wind. On windy days at my house, it doesn't feel nearly as hot outside. IME, low humidity and breeziness seem to go together, so maybe that's the difference.

Well I don't know what Dallas's humidity was but the sign at the bank said 113 and it was a lot more tolerable that day than it is here.

Oh my that's terrible! I guess I don't think of 'heat wave' when I think of Russia, and even though we've had a pretty hot summer here, rain is DEFINITELY one thing we are not lacking! Most of our lakes are filled to capacity and then some.

Ok, so, it kinda irritates me when people say, "but it's a dry heat."

So, 100 degrees with a heat index of 113 means that it feels like 113 outside. 99 degrees with a heat index of 105 means that it feels like 105 outside. Assuming your figures are all correct, it was more humid in Dallas, AND it felt hotter as well.
And I would EXPECT it to 'feel hotter' and BE hotter in Texas (and most south western places) than here in N. Indiana ;)

I lived in Arizona for almost 8 years.........I know how 'dry heat' feels, I know that the ground gets so hot you wouldn't dream of going bare foot, and I know every animal around seeks shade in any form and STAYS there moving as little as possible, LOL............one thing I loved about it though, there was NO SKEETERS to deal with, so when the sun went down it was NICE out and skeeter free :D

I can also tell you I've visited my sister for a week or so at a time during the summer........she lives in Arkansas. I'd take Arizona weather ANY DAY OF THE WEEK over what they have! They have the high temps right along with TERRIBLE humidity.........humidity so bad the air feels like soup and it doesn't matter what time of day or night it is, though it does get a bit cooler after dark........then you have swarms of skeeters to contend with, hahaha, so ya, I'll stay right here in the North kthx :D

It's disconcerting here when you think that we've been having these extremely hot days almost non-stop since the early part of the end of May.

I forget how many days we've had in a row in the upper 90s.

I don't know exactly what the heat and humidity are here right now . . . but its really, really hot.

At least I'm not in Russia: Russia May Lose 15,000 Lives, $15 Billion of GDP in Heat Wave - Bloomberg

Its so bad they closed our Moscow office this morning.
:yikes: :yikes: I read that and the blog, and that's just awful :(

And it's supposed to get to 100 where I'm at with nearly 50% humidity, but it feels way worse than that. It's so wet outside that everything sticks to you the second you walk out the door, and you begin sweating when you hit sunlight. Nasty.

Edit: Renee, I agree. . . I've been talking with my mom about this since May/June. The heat is really getting to me. :( I haven't taken the dog on regular walks since July, because with the exception of a handful of days, it's been over 85 and usually over 90 since then.

I just checked weather.com and it stated it is 101 here, with 109 heat index. grumbles
I swear every year it is getting hotter. I don't remember it being in the triple digits 10 years ago, maybe even 5.

I was just thinking earlier this evening, as I waited in misery for the crowded train, that I sometimes feel like I spend half the year wishing the weather away!

But god don't I appreciate it when the weather is nice. :)
