1) I have read that puppy needs to be taken out for potty after basically everything... eating, sleeping, playing, etc. etc. So my question is very literal (sorry). When we get puppy, and crate training begins: we come home at lunch... do we let puppy out to go pee immediately (b/c she's been in her crate for 3+ hours) then let her eat and take her out again after eating? i.e. 20 mins between eliminations  Or do we come home, feed her, then take her out to eliminate once?

2) When potty training I have seen some dogs be trained to make a bell shake at the back door... i.e. there will be a jingle bell attached to the back door knob. This way the dog isn't scratching, or barking at the back door to get our attention... instead it's just a ring. Has anyone heard of this?? If so, how do you go about this association from the beginning? Do you shake the bell everytime you go out the door to take puppy to potty?

Thanks a bunch!

Hey, my puppy peed ever half hour when I got her at 8 weeks (except when she was sleeping).

Take your puppy out often. :) Especially if you see the nose go to the ground, or a sudden far-off look in it's eyes.

1) Take her out to pee immediately, then take her out after she''s done eating and once more before you leave for the afternoon ;) Better to be safe and stay positive than to have an accident.

2) I have heard of people accomplishing this by taking the puppy''s paw in their hand and making them swat the bells then immediately going outside. Eventually the puppy associates the two. If the puppy ever rings the bells even if you are positive she doesn''t need out you must take her out.
