i just posted a couple days ago saying how i was gonna try crate training my dog so she'd stay in the crate when i'm gone...well, i tried leaving her home today in it for about 4 hours and she pooped and peed...she poops outside of the cage..weird i know (it's a wire kinda thing)... and she peed on her bed and blankets....i had her bed, blanket, toys and a chew treat in there with her and she still just pees all overr ...idk what to do about it ...i let her out before i left and she peed but then she went again when we were gone..i just don't understand ...is there anything i can do to keep her from going in her cage..i thought since her bed and blankets were in thereshe wouldn't go on them but i guess she doesnt mind laying in it...this really fustrates me cause shes a year old and everytime i put her in her cage she does this and by now you'd think she would have learned ..so any tips that can help idk if theres anything to really do...she's untrainable!! lol

is the crate..

Is the crate really small? Like just big enough for her to lay down and an inch or two on the sides so she can turn around--that is most important. It has to be really small at first! Also I have found that some dogs will pee in blankets and push the blankets out of the way so I would not have any in there at first--just bare bottom--that way they can't escape the pee if they go!

thanks

:) thhanks for help.. yahh it's not that big ..i think it's a good size...i've had her in there before with no blankets or anything and she still goes..but your right she did kinda push them but there still was pee all over everything...she's just really stubborn and hates when we leave her...so it's really hard to keep her from going so i'm trying to think of some new ways ...hopefully it will start working..any other ideas anyone?

Try not putting so much stuff in there. You can even go with a bare-bottom crate for once, or just leave a towel in there or something. The crate needs to be small enough to where if she poos or pees, she cannot get away from it effectively. A dog will no willingly lay in their own mess. If it can't get away, then it has no choice than to hold it...

The crate only needs to be big enough for her to stand up and turn around in. No bigger.

Did you get her used to the crate, or is she just sort of shoved in and then you leave?

try feeding her in there, with the door open.

let her see you put treats inside and then shut the door, so she wants to go in, but can't. Then let her in to get the treats, but leave the door open.

Put her in with a bone or kong stuffed with peanut butter, close the door, and then just sit quietly near the crate and read a book or something. This way, the crate is associated with good things, and it doesn't always mean you're leaving her.

Def take the blankets and bedding out of there. One of my dogs would mess in her crate with blankets in there, since she could just ball them up and lie on a non messed spot, Plus, unless you are certain that she doesn't chew on her bedding, you don't want that in there anyway. A friend of mine had her dog eat part of the bedding. After a $1500 vet bill to remove part of the bowels that had a big ol wad of blanket in it (the obstruction caused tissue death from lack of oxygen) she swore no more bedding! Anyway, shih tzus and lhasa type dogs always seem to take FOREVER to potty train, a couple of my grooming clients never got 100% housebroken. And there were a bunch that did have that "dirty dog syndrome", would wait untill they were bathed and freshly groomed to poop and then run and roll around it. Keep up with the crate, and try restricting her food and water for the hour or so before you have to crate her. That will give her less ammo to work with! :)
