I read on The Dog Food Project that cottage cheese is very good for dogs. I know a friend that feeds her dogs cottage cheese in addition to the dog food. I wanted to start giving my 12 weeks old pup some cottage cheese as well, but not sure how much to give him and how often. Should I give him the cottage cheese as a mid-day snack or with one his meals? I feed him 2 times a day -- once in the morning and once early evening. Oh, and I wanted to know what other fresh fruits and veggies do you all recommend are good additions to his diet? And how often should I be giving these fresh fruits & veggies -- and when...do I give it to him after his meal, with his meal or in-between meals as snacks?

Thanks!

Shi :)

Before adding cottage cheese make sure your not overdosing on calcium, especially in a large breed pup. It makes a great addition but if you are already feeding a high quality food you may not need the extra calcium as that would be about the only reason to feed it. If you want to add a little something just to mix it up for the pup try some plain yogurt, it has those good probiotics in it. Also things like sardines, tuna fish, egg, carrots, green beans, etc are a nice addition. Make sure to pulp any fruit or veggies if you are using them as a filler so your dog can utilize the benefits.

Actually cottage cheese isn't ultra high in calcium, so overdosing isn't possible.

A cup of 2% fat plain cotteage cheese contains about 140 mg of calcium and 300 mg of phosphorus.

I would suggest giving the cottage cheese as a snack, frozen in a Kong toy. That way the puppy will get some mental stimulation as well. :)

Thanks for the advice guys! I am still feeding him Nutro Max for puppies....I am swtiching him over to Solid Gold for Puppies later this month. I just bought the new dog food this past weekend! YEY!

I guess I'm gonna need to do some more reading and & research before adding anyting to his diet. Plus, he is still a puppy (12 weeks this week! :) ) and I wasn't sure if I should or could add anything!
