I was reading a vet's report today who cautioned on ever giving a dog a corn cob. Seems with so many cookouts, people are treating their dogs to leftovers. He said you might as well plan a vet call and surgery before hand. They DON'T get digested and most of the time don't pass.

Hmm. Never heard that. Although I don't give my dogs' corn cobs now .....when I was a kid... I remember my (childhood) dog's favorite thing to chew on was corn cobs. Luckily we never had a problem. :)

A good friend of mine 's lab ingested a corn cob. He raided the trash, and she didn't even know the dog had eaten it. When the lab started to get sick, she took him to the vet (the dog had previously had surgery after swallowing wood- darn beaver) and the vet did blood work, but nothing else. During the weekend, lab got more and more sick, finally ending up in doggie ER. After x-rays and exploratory surgery, the vet produced a 4 inch corn cob. If she had waited much longer, the dog would have been in some serious trouble. Retrievers are the catfish/pigeons of the dog community- they eat anything.

Glad there was someone who could back this up !!!! I'm sure in the past 60 years I've let dogs eat them !!! Now I know I was lucky !!! They've all enjoyed kibbling off the cobs , but I can't remember giving them the whole thing. Posted just as a caution .... now I guess it IS a warning !!

happened to a girl I know also, her gsd raided the garbage, the dog got sicker and sicker, finally when she took it in to the vet, it was way to late, the cob had obviously not disinigrated(sp), and was stuck in the intestine, because she waited so long, the intestine had literally rotted away, he had to be put down :((.. Notice I dont say "friend",,just some idiot I know ..
Very horrible way to die I'm sure

I totally understand the concern. However, I feed my dachshund raw corn cobs (he only eats the kernels and then I take the cob away). Just like with raw bones, etc, dogs must be supervised. No reason not to let your dog enjoy some corn if you are able to supervise.

On the same front, my Golden (Eli) once raided the trash after a scrumptous lobster dinner party my family had. He was heaving up red shell particles for 2 hours! Thank goodness his body knew to reject it before it went down into the intestinal gullet. He never did that again! (Nor would I let him near trash!!)

My bf's Dobermann has chewed or swallowed so many random items, a golfball (very dangerous), a corncobb ( which was removed surgically, the vet told us it couldn't be digested and surgery was the safest outcome.
