My dog continuously give stool sof like milkshake recently. I am feeding Innova Puppy to him for two months. He did sometime have soft stool before, but not as often as recently. I also tried fish oil but already stopped. I also suspected that I am feeding too much. But after I reduce the dosage, the soft stool still continues. What is the most posible cause of soft stool?

Hi Tony,

I'm a rank amateur, but if the soft stool isn't from the recent shave you did on your dog it's probably his diet.

I recently determined that my dog's soft stool problem was from either liver training treats or raw chicken skin. I cut both out of her diet and we have firm stools now.

Keep notes of everything that goes in and everything that comes out. Include times and quantities. The problem food will become apparent soon.

Pay attention to liquid intake as well. I have observed that when I drink too much coffee...

Oh my! hehe

I have heard that if you add some canned pumpkin to his food it can harden up stools. I'd also be worried about diet (although you are feeding a very good food), health (does he seem sick), maybe stress can cause it too.

If your dog gets a clean bill of health from the vet then maybe The Innova you are feeding is too rich. Try something with 'simple' ingredients that is just as good like Canidae or California Natural.

You may also want to add enzymes ("Prozyme", for example) to your dogs food.

We had these issues and we did 3 things:

1)Switched kibble
2)fed less
3)added enzymes.

Bingo!

suggest you visit a vet to rule of any infection. Sometimes infection can cause loose stool.

another probable cause is diet. some diet reasons includes
- Sudden change of diet, since yur dog is on innova for sometime, this probably is not the cause. however, it could be the batch of dog food tat could be stale. You may want to change to a fresh new pack and observe any improvement. If yes, then throw away the old pack as it is probably contaminated
- recent treats or milk and milk by-products. yur pet may not be able to digest treats that you have recently fed him. cut all treats and keep to his basic meals only.

If all else fails, switch to homecooked brown rice and 1 meat type just to observe if situation improves. Pls chooose a meat type that your pet are able to take without problem previously. also, ensure your pet is well hydrated with fresh water available at all time.
