About a week ago my dog started making a face where he hangs his mouth open a little with his lips pulled back and pants slightly without sticking out his tongue. I've only seen him make this face when he's stressed or hot (from sunbathing) but it's not hot out and I don't see how he'd be stressed out for an entire day where nothing is out of routine.

He'll do it for a day, is fine for a couple days after that then starts doing it again for a day. If it persists, we'll go to the vet, but it keeps going away so I'm holding off for now.

As a little history, he's 2 years old, has a medium coat, he's about 50lbs but is slightly underweight (always has been). No health problems as of yet. The most notable thing that I could see as being an issue is that he hasn't been vaccinated since his puppy shots, nor has be been de-wormed since then. Titres indicate that he's still immune though. I checked over his body to see if he's in pain, but nothing is out of the ordinary. Energy and appetite is all the same.

What could be going on?

Could be a intestinal cramp or something? Has he had a complete blood panel done? That would be my first step .... just to rule out something internal.

He has not been to the vet, so no complete blood panel has been done. He hasn't done it again since Sunday, so I'm still holding off for the moment. Would an intestinal cramp cause diarrhea or constipation?

Diarrhea or constipation could cause the intestinal cramping! Symptoms are so variable that you just have to look for signs of pain and try to figure out where it's coming from. A dog with intestinal cramping will often do a lot of rear leg stretching (out of the ordinary for the dog - this isn't to say every time a dog stretches its rear legs it's in pain ...) :)

Interesting! His stool is normal and I haven't seen mutch stretching, but now I know what to look out for. He still hasn't done it since Sunday, so I think we're good. Maybe it was a cramp. Thanks for the information!
