my mouse.

i'm not just going to rush to the pet shop. buy a male. chuck him in the cage for a week then seperate them and then have to deal with the babies.

i was readin up on it. i was thinking of breeidng angus. just once because she is a beautiful girl. i've fallen in love with her. she's a sweetheart. she's so alm but so cute all the time. i read about looking out for possible inheritable problems (kink in tail, whit tipped tail, off balance) and she doesn't have any of these problems. i understand she is only about 2 or 3 months old so i probably won't breed her for a while as i want to decided if this is actually a good idea.
i would buy a male, a stable boy that i think would produce stable babies.
i would breed them once. then, he would just be a pet. not a sex machine. i don't have an interst in breeding mice as i know that many go to snakes.

the babies, i would keep 1 female from the litter or perhaps 2. to continue Angie's line. she's an awesome mouse.
i would put an add in the paper and do my best effort to find all the other babaies good home. i wouldn't sell all the babies at once to one person because thats too suspicious. i would charge more than the pet shop (only by a little bit) to ward off people just lookign for a cheap mouse. i would advertise them as carefully bred healthy mice.

if i cannot find homes for all the babies. i would ask the pet shop if they are looking for breeders. i would show her both mother and father and have information on their age and such.

if i still had little babies that no one wanted, i guess i would just have to accept the consequences and care for them. its my responsibility if i breed. it might be difficult but atm i am willing.

whatya think? or is it a bad plan?

Hmmmmmmmmm..... I would say that if you could breed them for a good cause ( research ? ) go ahead . Otherwise , just buy a new mouse . The only mouse I have is tethered to my computer .

Please don't that is just my feelings. Give your mice a nice little life how horribly short as it is, but once breeding starts do you really have that many friends that want mice? Most end up in the belly of something. I am truly a mouse fan, have always loved them. They just get the raw end of the deal, i wouldn't want to be brought into this world as a mouse. If you actually do consider breeding find a site like www.spoiledratten.com only for mice and learn what you can to "better" the "breed" instead of conitinuing the lines you found at the petstore which i believe are most likely inbred. After all they are dinners so most people don't care.:(

Hmmm.

Well...

I'm stuck on this one.

I know that if I were ever to get rats again, they would be from breeders. Serious small pet owners, just like serious dog owners, want a good quality pet too. We lucked out with our ratties that we rescued.. they are going to be three soon and have been healthy (knock on wood).

But, I think a LOT of research needs to be done. And I mean A LOT. You shouldn't just breed your mouse because she's cute... Find out about different types, is your mouse worthy of being bred? So many questions to ask yourself...

And, if you do all of this and you have a good specimen that should be a part of reproduction, then go for it. But only after said research. And only after you have considered the costs and are willing to accept responsibility.

I would be very careful.... I have a friend who breeds fancy rats. She can't part with any of them and is up to a LOT of rats. It breaks her heart everytime one dies - and two years is OLD for a rat.

I'm not a rodent lover by any means, but seeing how people fall in love with their ratties and how small mice are - it would be too easy to keep them all, and their babies, and their babies, and their babies, and soon you might be up to a LOT of mice, then you deal with where to put them and overcrowding and mice getting loose and possibly inbreeding. I would just be very careful as I've seen "one litter" result in almost 100 rodents in the house....

really?
www.kimsarkrescue.org

We're celebrating our 5 year anniversay this coming month, and we currently have over 50 mice available that need homes.

Me? I vote don't do it. Mice have BYB's just as much as any other species. And no responsible breeder would ever turn animals over to a pet store, period.

Really? Maybe you should look around.. there are animals of many different species that are ALWAYS in need of homes.

Breeding mice is just as serious as breeding dogs.

I say, please don't breed. You may not see any problems now but when she's older something may come up that the babies will have inherited...maybe cancer is common in the line of mice she comes from...

If you want more mice, you can do so without breeding. But if you really must breed, find a good breeder: just like you would do for dogs.

The point is you bringing in something that will reproduce in 21 days, that is from birth! Then yo have to have male/ female cages or those will be making babies at 21 days too, and they can have up to 20 young. A mouse lives 3 years at the very longest. ARe you prepared to take care of 20 plus mice for 3 years or will you be depositing them at the petstore..sigh and there is no way on God's green earth i would bring something into the world to be a research subject. I don't want to be responisible for "my babies" being dinners either. Best to enjoy what you have and let one mouse or two have the life of Reilly. AT least they will get a chance for a nice time while they are here.

Just like there are reputable dog breeders, there ARE reputable mice breeders as well. Honestly, I think you are breeding your mouse for the wrong reasons. Think about if you gave those reasons to breed your dog. They wouldn't be good reasons. Why should it be different for a mouse?

I grew up with rats and mice as pets. They are wonderful little creatures. I think if you really want to breed your mouse, or get into mouse breeding then check around on the internet for some information on the subject. Maybe someone has a better than petstore quality "stud" mouse you could use LOL!

I had mice for a long time when I was younger and I loved the little things. I have wanted a rat forever but keep telling myself whenI'm meant to get one one will fall into my lap. But I've been saying that for like four years and haven't gotten one yet(but people always ask me to take their dogs!)

I say don't breed must because many lines have cancer and it is so hard to find some that don't. Mice only live a couple years tops anyway and a pregnancy really drains a little animal.

ok. point taken. but i seriously doubt there are any reputable breeders in my area. this place is just too small and no-one cares.

i might have ended up with a buck last night  because one of the mice my sister got from the pet store we suddeny relised last night was not a girl. she doesn't want a buck so i said if she decided not too keep him and wanted to take him to the pet shop, then i would take him. we'd already saved him. i don't wanna take him back there. so i put him in a tank by himself last night and kept him in my room. grace will decided what she wants to do today.

hmm. still considereing breeding. but i will do a LOT more research before i do anything. thanks

Buy the mouse a cool little outfit and let her attract her own mate. I mean, if they have clothes for Guinea pigs, surely they must have them for mice.

Tongue in cheek here before you all think I need meds. I just wanted a good shot and posting this ludicrous site somebody sent me:

http://cuddlycavies.homestead.com/costumes.html
   Who on Earth came up with that? Poor little guys/gals.
