Puck is getting his adult teeth and all seems well however one of his canine teeth was dead when i got him ( brown and absesed) we treated the abses and the vet said to let the small wound heal and not worry about the tooth as they pup was going to loose it anyway. Now his new canine is coming in behind it, the tooth does seem loose but it seems to be pretty red around the area and jack wont stop trying to lick pucks gums. How long should it take for the new tooth to push out the old? just wondering if anyone has any experiance with this.

If the new tooth is coming in behind it it may not get loose and fall out, it may need pulled. At least, that's how it was for Zoey my grandparents dog :( and it bothered her... Only you couldn't really tell until you could tell the different After they were pulled.

That's a really common problem in small dogs, but never heard of it for a larger breed. Jackson had to have 4 baby teeth pulled at 7 months old when he was neutered... they were all the canine teeth, and his permanent teeth had come in behind them... I would definitely have it removed, if you think it's not going to come out on it's own.

If it doesn't come out on it's own, you may have to have it extracted. I have seen pups at the spay and neuter clinics I volunteer at have to have their puppy teeth extracted because they haven't fallen out. The worse I saw was a poodle pup who's baby teeth never fell out she had to have them extracted and was fine.

Have you tried giving him something like a bully stick to chew on? Maybe that would help loosen it up so it can come out on its own.

ETA: when our dogs were teething we froze pop bottles full of water for them to chew on. They really loved it, maybe that would help with the redness and swelling?

At one point Kiba (mini schnauzer) had 8 canine teeth - uber vampire zombie dog!!!

By her spay appointment (like 2 weeks from having all 8) she had lost 2, but two had to be extracted. Try giving him some different chews, something this texture and "give" to it.

^ LOL, Quinn had 8 canine for awhile too! It was wild. I was starting to get really worried because they didn't seem like they were going to fall out (not loose at all), but sure enough she lost all 4 baby ones within a few days. It took some impatient waiting but I was very glad I didn't have to take her in to get them fixed.

I agree too that I need to be pulled if it didn't fell out. You could wait for a while or it should better be checked.

well good to know its not all that uncommon. he has a vet visit in a couple of weeks. If it gets worse i might take him in soon, But will get him some nice chewies to help loosen it and hopefully it will come out on its own.
