My laptop is giving me fits lately. It will work perfectly for weeks on end, but lately, if I shut it down and restart it later (like I'm moving from place to place), one of a couple of things have begun to happen.

A)upon logging in, only some of my icons are showing their proper icons (harddrive programs) and the others are just plain "window" icons. None of my start up programs run.

B)only a fraction of my icons show up on the desktop and those that show are the plain window icons

C)I can force my way into something with the "Run" command (it's how I"m on the net right now)

All of the above are accompanied by the BSOD showing up where my Start button and desktop tray should be.

I ran Spybot yesterday and cleaned up a lot, I have Avast! for my antivirus and recently scanned my harddrive for troubles.

What else is going on here?? It's driving me insane and making me afraid to turn off my computer in case I should need it quickly. Usually after about 5 or 6 times of Ctrl-Alt-Del and shutting down/restarting from that menu, I can get things working again, but that doesn't really make any sense either.

I don't guess I'm sufficiently nerdy enough to answer your question but the window thing sounds like the hard drive is going. The computer isn't recognizing the locations that the short cuts are leading to. What happens when you double click them? Or right click one, go to Properties, then Find Target?

Also any chance you can get a screenshot of the desktop? PrtSc button then Run > mspaint.exe and paste it in, then save and upload like normal.

Sounds like the Hard Drive is warning you that it's about to go out. Back up while you can.

It's easy to put a new HD in and get it working again, but will be costly to get your data off a broken HD.
