This question is to anyone (Especially Plant M.).

Both of these breeds have very similar jobs in life and I was just curious how these two breeds compare and contrast to each other. I am mostly wondering how they differ in body type, temperament and how they function as family dogs (which I know is not their original purpose necessarily)

I don't mind opinions either if you think one is better than the other.

I am not looking at buying one anytime soon, I am just a curious guy.

The kangals came from the same stock as CAS back before the Former USSR took over CEntral Asia in the 20's.

Some say the Central Asian dogs not yet called Ovcharka mixed with local Sight hounds like the Tazi making a taller faster bigger Kangal.

So CAS are shorter stockier , Kangals taller leaner.
CAS have cropped tails.ears/ + come in almost all colors thus wider gene pool.
Kangals are more closely bred due to black mask requirement and have ears and tail. Inbreeding can bring forth more health issues.

Both sadly have a sub division for dog fighting thus removing their abilities as working pack lgds'.

My fav was a Kangal named Pasha from Sivas regal.
I showed him in UKC.

They are very much alike. Due to both of them being NON man made thus a landrace of sorts it depends on the breeders selection.
What and how long they are breeding for.

Work , show or fight.

The more generations of proven working or family dogs that can protect but work well with other dogs and or not to reactive to humans is the best choice.

Try Sue Kocher Sivas Regal any pups from the line of Pasha ,is a great start.
Ive met over 50 Kangals, and he by far was the best but a bit of a slobber monster.
