Help!!!

I took my westie girl in two days ago with mucousy diarrhea that was tinged with blood. I also brought in a stoll sample for testing. The doctor said that it was full of oocysts and that she had a case of coccidiosis. He gave her two shots and sent me home with prescription dog food, Albon for two weeks and a probiotic to soothe the tummy. One of the shots was an antibiotic ansd the other was to soothe the stomach and reduce diarrhea. We went home, played, ate and she was feeling better. Stools started to have more shape and not so much mucous or blood.

She woke me up this morning at 1:30 am barking. She had soiled her crate and more than likely licked it up since she is a poo eater. I did she a spot of blood on her bedding. We went out, pooped more...very squishy, mucous, and a bit of blood. Cleaned the crate, fresh bedding and popped her back in. Got up at 5:15...more poo in crate...went outside, pooped again...more mucous and blood. Had breakfast, played and crated for a few hours to go to school. Came home moe fo the same. Except this time I am really getting concerned about the blood.

I have read that puppies can become annemic from blood loss. Her energy lever seems alright, she is eating, drinking, and playing.

How long will this last? I am really getting concerned. I posted this on the puppy forum but got no response. I am pretty desperate now. I would appreciate any help.

Honestly, I'm not sure why your vet sent you home with your pup.

Our male Sheltie, Crosbie had Coccidia as a puppy and we almost lost him. He had to be on IV at the vet clinic a few nights.

Your dogs case might not be as bad as ours was, but I'd efinately give your vet a call and ask about this.

I guess because she was not depressed or lazy. We even went for a walk that evening and she seemed fine. Yesterday she was fine durinfg the day but after 1:30 the diarrhea became frightening do to the blood.

Ddi your pup have a lot of blood and mucous in the stool? The hair around Scout bum is red!

Bleach bleach and more bleach. Clean all areas she may have pooed. Put all her dog bowls in the dishwasher. Spray the yard and clean your carpets.
There are several ways your pup could have gotten coccidia.
I hope your pup gets better!:)

I am also concenred about the blood. We jsut went out and she pooped. It wat somewhat formed and slimy but now the blood is like just dripping afterwards. I am at my wits end.

Spray is with bleach. A 50/50 solution.

No blood at all. His stool isn't even loose, I was more worried about him being lethargic and cranky after his shots this afternoon.

Did you take him in for that specifically or did they do a fecal flotation and just find it? Good for you that it is not bad. This stuff is really gross. However, I would keep the food bowls super clean, bedding, crate, and potty area. Apparently they can get reinfected really easily. The med does not kill the bug but stops it from repoducing until the pups immunity can kick in.

I just came back in from cleaning the yard. My house, yard and hands smell like there has been a chlorine leak in the area. Oh well, I just hope that it works. Sending good vibes your way!

I puppy had blood in his poops, but they were "runny runny" poops.

His condition declined so fast that we almost lost him while he was at the vets office. It was quite scary.

Definately give your vet another call, or at least the on call vet and speak with them.

It just seems odd to me that they just sent him home so quickly.

I did speak with the vet and he assured me that unless the poop was all bloody, watery and no form that she would be fine. I continued to watch her last night and she seems to be improving. She did poop during the night but no blood. This morning she was more frisky and ate like a chow hound. When we went out she pooped and it had a real form and no blood.

I will continue to monitor today. Thank goodness she loves the taste of the Albon and the probiotic paste. Liquid medicine is a nightmare to administer by just one person. I am always amazed that if I have to help the vet hold her while he gives her medicine in the office, how does he expect me to give it to her by myself at home?

Thanks for the advice. I am beginning to feel much better about this situation.

This is all normal for coccida. It is very hard to get rid of. When the dog has his diarrhea you need to use a hose and clean it right after he is done. It takes sometimes a month to completely go away. If it is the same after 10 days, call the vet and he will up the dose probably. Make sure he is getting lots of fluids. Is it just water and blood coming out or is it mushy with mucus and blood? How many times are you feeding a day?
