What is the best way to clean my shih-tzu's ears. She is 4 months old, but, they put off an odor and have dark puppy ear wax in them. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. BTW..her name is Sophie.

Let's see. Sophie's ears need to be cleaned out by a groomer. It seems as though your vet is just overlooking this. You could call and make an appt. with a groomer just for them to clean her ears out. Tell them that you want the ear hair plucked out and the inside of the ear cleaned with cleaner. They will know what to do. Floppy eared dogs such as Shih-Tzus have ears that don't allow a lot of oxygen to get to them, thereby allowing bacteria to build up. Therefore, we need to clean them out manually so as to keep the nasties away. Anyway, I do hope this helps!! :)

I appreciate your response. Actually, Sophie was groomed last weekend and had her ears done. I think she has a bacterial infection after another response on this forum and a discussion with my mother-in-law about this earlier tonight. We cleaned her ears out carefully with Q-tips and ChlorhexiDerm...hopefully this will help. It should. She's going to the vet later this week for her final baby shots, so, if it's still there I will get more instruction from the vet. Thanks again!
