How do you do it?

I've never had a dog that needed it but the vet told me today that Summer has a bit of gunk in her ears and that I should start cleaning them out every month or so. Being an idiot, I never asked how to go about cleaning them. So what do I need to do?

You pour the ear cleaner in there, massage their ears... then let them shake it all out and take a cotton ball and gently wipe out the excess... At least that's what i've always been told.

I load the cotton ball up with ear cleaner and then just swab down in their ear like you would your own. *shrugs* If the ears are really nasty I flush them (tilt the dog's head, dilute the cleaner with water, and then just squirt it down the ear to get the big gunks of nasty out, then swab and repeat as needed), but usually just swabbing them when do the trick.

Ear Cleaner...I use this: Ear Cleansing Solution by Vet Solutions - 8 oz:Discount Vet Supplies

I get mine through the grooming department at work.

I use one from Vet's Best, it's just a liquid usually has tea tree in it and stuff.

There's one from dr.harvey's that i like too.

For me, how I clean depends on how bad the ear is. If there's just some gunk that needs to be wiped out, then I just soak a cotton ball and wipe the ears out--go deep with the cotton ball, I mean don't shove it down the ear canal lol but you want to get in there a little bit. How we're taught to do it, is to pour the cleaner in the ear and actually fill the ear canal, hold the ear shut and massage the base so everything gets moistened and loosened up, let the dog shake it out, and then take moistened cotton balls and keep wiping out the ears until you don't get any more gunk. That is not the fun method lol, Juno has a wax plug in one of her ears and I have to sit on top of her and hold her head down in order to be somewhat successful

This is the cleaner I use: Amazon.com: Derma-Pet Ear Skin Cleanser 16 oz long nosed bottle: Kitchen & Dining

Works well and it has a delicious peach scent, I can't keep my nose out of Juno's ears after using this stuff. :D

My ear cleaner of choice was Oti-rinse, but the company went out of business. Now I like Epi-Otic. I cannot STAND the smell of the Vet Solutions flush. Ewwwwwwwww.

And OMG Southpaw you actually LIKE the smell of the Malacetic? EWWWWWW-er. :p They SAY it's peach scented, but to me it just smells nasty  It's primarily for yeast infections/dogs prone to yeast infections in the ears, but it can be used as a general flush. If you can stand the smell.

I used Epi Otic, too, with the method that Southpaw suggested (fill the ear canal, rub the ear (from the outside), then use a tissue to wipe out).

I also mixed my own with witch hazel, aloe and a bit of lavender oil -- for that, since it was more of a gel, I glopped some in, massaged the ear, and then wiped it back out using cotton pads (like you would use for removing makeup). Recipe is on the DogAware site:DogAware.com Health: Ear Infections in Dogs

If she just needs her ears cleaned every once in a while, I would go with one of the more gentle solutions rather than, e.g., the blue power recipe that people talk about a lot.

I can't even see much in there at all. I've honestly never really looked into their ears. They're so hairy anyways it's hard to see. I compared to Mia and I can see what he was talking about. It looks really minor though. Just don't want her to get an ear infection down the road though!

We generally suggest taking some hemostats and pulling the hair out of the ear if it's way down in. Allows better sight and less of a homey environment for mites and gunk. Your vet/vet tech could probably do it if you don't feel comfortable doing it yourself.

Pair of hemostats costs about $4.

I use the blue ear treatment here for ear cleaning, honestly. We have a bunch of it from when we made it for Bella, and even after giving some to a couple of friends, still have enough for a few cleanings for the dogs.

The vets recommended me a few for Bella's ears before we found blue ear, but they all made her scream, so I didn't feel right using them on the others, so blue ear has just kind of stuck.

LMAO really??? I love it! Maybe its just because the stuff I used to use smelled horrific, so anything i use now smells good lol. But my mom thinks it's gross too so maybe I'm just weird hahahaha.

*Gags* We've had that one, and I can't use it because of how disgusting the peach smell is. Yuck!

We used to use Oti-rinse too, but now use Epi-Otic as well.

Fine, more Malacetic for me. :rofl1:

My vet actually doesn't like Epi-Otic.... something about it not being as drying? I don't know. Despite the questionable smell of the malacetic lol, it's at least working well for Juno. We've tried another ear cleaner (don't know the name of it and I don't have it nearby) and I've done the ear wipes, and her ears would be dirty and stinky again within a couple days. She doesn't have an infection or anything so her ears shouldn't be such a problem. Much better results with this stuff.

I would think though that with a dog that doesn't have anything more than just a little wax buildup, any ear cleaner will suffice in wiping it out and cleaning the ears up.

Add me to the "I like Malacetic" cub. It is what our vet uses, and to me it doesn't stink. ??? Smells gooooood lol. Maybe if the ears were insanely gross and smelly then it would stink.... ha

I've tried to clean Nia's ears but there's nothing there. Although I've never dumped the solution down her ears yet but just by wiping, I don't get anything so I'm assuming it's clean. With Truffles, we just flip her ear up and use either cotton balls with a ear cleaning solution or a swab and just wipe it. We've also bought ear wipes when we've seen them. I think dogs like Paps with open ears that stand up aren't really that prone to ear infections or getting lots of ear gunk at least compared to Truffles, Nia really doesn't have any.
