This is just so stupid... Those people will just train another breed... Which one will be next?

Oh no, not another city!!! This is exactly why I am going to do whatever is possible to stop it from happening here! Please guys if you read this and you haven't signed my petition please do so...for the love of the breed!

http://savethebulliedbreeds.tripod.com

I need as many signatures as humanly possible. This is one stubborn city!

Can anyone tell me if out of town or out of province or out of country signatures count?

Thanks

In Independence, the ordinance approved Monday tightens restrictions on dangerous dogs. For instance, it outlaws transporting a dangerous dog in the open bed of a truck
They should outlaw transporting ALL dogs in the open bed of a truck!

Poor pitties :(

So what happens if you own a pitbull? Im guessing you turn it in to the Humane Society and they re-home it in a different city?

Ohh nevermind.. I read the article.. pitbulls who are registered can stay but puppies born after a certain date have to go. Where do they go then?

There are about 20 pit pulls now registered in Overland Park. Under the new ordinance, if one of the dogs gives birth, her puppies will have to be removed from the city in six weeks.

i thought this was especially a nice touch. yes, selling puppies too young so that they're improperly socialized is absolutely going to help with the problem.

Yeah, that part really got to me and showed just how much there is a lack of proper dog information available to these suits who sit in their offices putting signatures to pieces of paper.

That's so da*% stupid! Let's see, I guess next they'll ban Rot's and GSD's and work their way down the breed size list until there are no dogs left to ban. Do these people not do any research??? Nvm, apparently not...that's painfully obvious. Out of the city by 6 weeks, yeah that'll help. *sarcasm intended* Sending people to jail and fining them is about the only good idea they had. No dog should be in the bed of a pickup. The only time it's even remotely safe is when their in those hunting dog portable kennels that are attached to the truck (metal, doors, don't move, ya know).

i expect big bad change here for this was worse then a bite, this woman died. I should find the link to the news program. The dogs were behind a 6 ft fence. She had been telling her family for quite some time that those dogs were going to get out of that fence but since it was so tall no one figured it would really happen.

I like pitties, i have met grand pitties, but i also am concerned with the frequency of bites and this latest one here. It is one thing to say that all these dogs are being prejudiced against, which they are, but you cant ignore the fact that our city has been plagued with a series of attacks. Two dogs went down the street and attacked several people on it. It wasn't a case of breed mistaken either, they were pitties. THis woman was killed by two. THe news report said that the fireman had to hit the dog with an ax to make it release the woman. I don't know where the line is between save the breed..and look at what is happening here.

WE all know that proper socialization and breeding produces a good pittie. Still that isn't what these owners that are making a huge profit off of the breed and breeding without temperment concern are doing. We know too that the owners of alot of these dogs do not know what they have to do to train and not encourage the prey drive. They want a "tuff" dog. I can't blame at this point a city council for having red flags up with what has happened here in the last few months. I don't know what the answer should be. A special license to own one? A very expensive one? that would exclude morons like the landlord's flunky that stood in my living room telling me how he was gonna breed him a bad dog..that would not be fair to the good owners. Still there has to be a better way then what is happening now.

here is the link http://www.wdaftv4.com/fullstory.asp?ID=14820

it is exactly these people (the owners) that i am trying to describe. Shelters screen adoptive homes before the dog goes in it. Maybe there could be a screening for future pitty owners. Just an idea.

If anyone wants to blame someone or something for this attack, it should be the owner(s) of the dogs involved. It was mentioned that the woman had complained about the dogs harassing her along the fence. Is the owner of these dogs deaf, blind and dumb? Does s/he not see these dogs exhibiting these poor behaviors? Any RESPONSIBLE owner would be extremely concerned by their dogs acting this way towards a non-aggressive stranger.

Ninety-nine percent of the time, the owners of these dogs are either naive and laugh off OBVIOUS warning signs, or they encourage their dogs to act that way. And we blame the dog? The breed even?

I'm not trying to make excuses for these dogs' behaviors, there aren't any. It's awful what happened, and very sad for the family of that woman.

Isn't that the truth.

of course it is the owners that was my point. Did you see the conditions of the house and how they can't find them? 6 weeks is just wrong. Does any city do a screening policy on perspective owners?

Question is, what city has the money and time to screen everyone who wants to own a large and/or powerful dog? The rescue and (responsible) placement of just a few pits is hard enough. It's a nice idea in theory, but not possible.

these people obviously know nothing!! 6 WEEKS!!!!!!!! i agree with the bed of the truck issue unless they are in dog boxes, crates, or having a person with them. i do ride in the back of the truck with the dogs and walkers or tytus collar are always in my hand and they are always laying down. this is getting so rediculous(sp?) i just hope they stay away from here. not that you can really get away with it here to many pits that hunt and to many kennels that breed huntin pits.

I personally would like to see a required CGC class for any owner with a Pit, Rottie, GSD, "bad breed", etc. This would force those people to put at least some training into their dogs. However, I'm sure that with the associated cost of running that many classes, it'll never happen.

True, very true. And I agree with you 100%. Personally, I'd like to start banning JRT's unless they have a CGC under their collar. ;) I don't mean to offend anyone, but I deal with multiple JRT's on a daily basis and have come to the conclusion that people hold a very odd double standard about behaviors. The same single-minded frenzy that has made JRT's popular for their "fiestiness, funny tricks and overall clownishness" is the exact same behavior that has landed the pit bull in so much trouble. Go figure.

It was a bit of a tongue in cheek statement. Nothing is ever solved from breed banning, we know this.
