So I've decided to switch onto this food from Nutro large breed puppy food, because my mum is complaining about how his stools aren't lookin' to good anymore. I've compared the ingredients, and to me, it looks as if csftpls (chicken soup...) has better ingredients and overall, better product than Nutro. I may be wrong, I'm definately no expert.

Which variety should I get my puppy? There is puppy formula, adult formula, and senior formula. I've read around that puppy's shouldn't eat puppy food because of the rapid growth or something?

Yes, don't put a large puppy on generic puppy food. The best for them is an adult food labelled for all lifestages. I have no idea what brands do it except Innova though. If you can't find any, a large puppy food will still be the best.

I would suggest Pro Plan. It is the best dog food on the market.

Definitely not. It's by Purina... It doesn't seem as bad as the other products, but I'm no expert. It's nowhere as good as Innova, Cannidae, Wellness, Eagle Pack etc... Maybe about the same as Nutro? Not sure.

I was feeding CSFTPLS until Mordy informed me that it just looks good on paper and is actually not all that great. Still a step up from dog chow and the likes. I would highly recommend Canidae, it is for all life stages and my Gunnar does wonderfully on it. My other dog is on Eagle Pack and she does great on that but it is more pricey than the Canidae.

Where do you buy Innova, Cannidae, Eagle Pack, etc? What makes them so much better than others?

You can look for stores that sell Innova here
www.naturapet.com
Eagle Pack you can get at some Petsmarts and Petcos

To understand why Innova,Cannidae and other foods are better than Pro Plan,Eukanuba,Science Diet, and other foods, go here.

Quality of ingredients, less fillers, no by-products...the reasons go on and on. Did you know that Purina puts diseased animals and roadkill as well as euthanized shelter pets into their dog foods.

I only have a limited amount of money though and from the things I heard Canidae must be pretty expensive? Anybody suggest a second food that has all lifestages and is good as well? If Canidae is anywhere near the pricerange of Innova, I don't think I'll be able to buy that.

Up here I can get a 40lb bag of Canidae for $30.00, Purina Pro Plan would be the same price for me at our petco so I think it is an excellent deal!

Where do you live? Where I live, in Canada, I think a 18lb bag of Nutro is about $25.

Here nutro is more expensive than innova, for example. Exactly for what Mordy said, that is that you feed half as much innova as nutro per day.

If you look around and check the bags for the recommended dose per day, you will be able to count for yourself what the cost will be, and decide according to it.

to be fair, you have to look at packaging sizes too. the largest bag of innova adult is 33 lbs for example, canidae 40 lbs, chicken soup 35 lbs and so on.

but even so, the higher end foods tend to come out the same or at least not much more expensive in daily feeding cost than mainstream brands.

Speaking of euthanized shelter pets, that used to be my job. After the animals had all been euthanized it was my job to put the bodies in the big bins that we had. The bodies would get picked up every other day, but we stored them in these HUGE bins. It was a gross and sad job but I needed the money so I had to put up with it. I disposed of dogs and cats that I would come in and see everyday and play with and give treats to, that was the hardest part of the job. That is why I don't feed the grocery store brand foods to my dogs anymore you don't know what is in them. I highly reccomend Eagle Pack or Innova, it may be more expensive but it's definetely worth it. Atleast you know what is in their products.
