How well would they do in Florida weather? I don't have a pool but I could keep it in the airconditioned house as much as needed.

When I go out to run and I bring the dog with me how do I give it water? I can't jog with a dog bowl in my hand.

A friend of the family has three chessys and you more then likely can't keep them from water! if you happen to jog past a lake, they are more then likely going to be in it. They are a definate water dog!! Great way to keep them cool in the summer time!!

also there is a portble water dish you can carry around.

Charlie and I go for long walks during the summer, he gets really hot and thirsty so I always bring his own water bottle, and I stop everyone once in a while and pour some out of the bottle and he laps it up while its pouring.

I live in Southern CA and have two Chesapeake Bay Retrievers. They do pretty well in warm weather here, but our "heat" is not nearly as oppressive as that in Florida. In the warmer months I do not exercise them in the middle of the day unless it involves swimming. I usually take them out in the morning and late afternoon. Mine are indoor dogs, but do enjoy sunbathing outside.
My husband runs with them and he wears a Camelbak (http://www.camelbak.com/index.cfm)and carries a foldable water bowl in the Camelbak.
I know of a couple of great breeders in FL- Chesagrove Kennels (http://www.chesagrove.com/) and Sailors Bay Kennels (http://www.sailorsbaykennel.homestead.com/index.html). There is also a very active breed rescue in FL, Chesapeake Bay Retriever Relief and Rescue (http://www.cbrrescue.org/). We got Indy from this organization, and he has proven to be a wonderful family pet.
Like you would with any prospective pet, be sure to research the breed before purchasing. Chessies are quite different from the other retrieving breeds. Chessies are hard, stubborn, protective, aggressive, one person/family dogs. But they are also silly, loving, loyal, kid-friendly dogs. I love the breed and would have no other.

When I was looking into retrievers years ago I read that they could be aggressive and hard to handle. More hyper than others.

They can be dog aggressive, but they are not generally aggressive toward people. They are stand-offish and reserved towards strangers, which leads many not to like Chessies. Both of mine love other dogs and frequent the dog park regularly. My female is food and toy possessive with dogs, so I have to keep an eye on her at the park to be sure she doesn't jump another dog and steal their toys. She loves all people though. My male avoids strangers, but is affectionate with people he is familiar with. So I guess it just depends from dog to dog.

Actually, the Chessies I have seen are not hyper, but have a quiet reserve that I have not seen in other retrievers. Both of mine even as puppies have been calm and almost lazy, and they always seem to constantly look to me for instruction/direction. It is often said that Chessies are stubborn and should be trained with a 2X4. But actually quite the opposite holds true. Chessies are very sensitive and will shut down upon harsh treatment (which leads many to believe that they are stubborn).

Both of my pups are active but not wild. They have their CGC's. One loves people. One loves dogs. My male is very trainable and obedient. My female is too, when she doesn't pretend that she is deaf. They have a bad reputation, but I really don't think it's warranted.

I was attacked by a Chesapeake Bay Retriever when I was a toddler.
I'm sorry you had a bad experience with them. I would love to send my Chessies your way to give you some sloppy kisses, and ask for your forgiveness for that bad Chesapeake that attacked you!:)

The best thing about my Chessies is that they adore their 9 year-old human brother. Most Chessies are wonderful family pets. Unfortunately, as with any breed there are some bad eggs.

They don't have to have a place to swim, but they like it. DH was deployed for last six months, and I only took them a few times to the beach. DH takes them a few times a week when he is home. They enjoy a good romp at the park also.
