There are people who realize that conformation is just another game to play with your dog, and not the end all be all of "preserving the breed". And then there are people who don't share such a reasonable attitude, LOL.
I completely agree with this.

Ideally I would look for a breeder who shows. The dogs don't have to have a championship, but something that actually looks like the breed would be nice. My main concern is health testing and temperament - everything else would take a backseat.

In theory I would take a puppy from a breeding where one parent wasn't showed. If it's something like a silly fault (think Revy's blue eye) that has no bearing on temperament or structure and the dog is healthy and drivey and otherwise beautiful? Sure, why the hell not? It's my money and I would get to decide what to do with it.

I don't like the show extremes dogs are bred to, and I don't want a straight up working dog, either - not unless that working dog has one hell of an off-switch.

I specifically sought out a breeder whose dogs can do Conformation and work. But the emphasis was on working ability. I've seen both my future ASTs parents work. That is more important to me than a CH on the front of their name.

That said, I wanted a breed that I could get a IPO3 title on AND get a CH on. ASTs fit the bill.

Having a breed that doesn't have a "job" anymore, I look more towards the conformation/show breeders. But I also know what I want and what I don't want. I don't look at just the conformation, I look at the whole package. I want a dog with drive yet has the looks too. I got that with Ivan, I'm hoping the next one is the same.

I prefer working stockdogs to show ring collies, but would buy from a show breeder in the future if I swapped my breed preference.

With chihuahuas, I will only buy from breeders who care about conformation. To me, it's VERY important that chihuahuas look and act like chihuahuas.

With other breeds (especially ones who have been bred to work and have jobs), the line gets a little more blurred.

I prefer the look of "working" border collies over ones who are bred to be shown. I don't care if someone wants a bc who has been bred for sports or show, but my preference is with breeders who breed mainly for herding.

If I were to get a toller or dobe, I'd go with a conformation breeder.

I'm interested in koolies, and will go to a breeder who works their dogs.

Do right by your dogs. Better the breed. Create a better generation with each breeding. I don't care what you're trying to achieve- the best flyball dogs, pretty show dogs, great stock dogs, etc. Just do right by your dogs. Be there as a good support system, take your puppies back for life, make sure they're healthy, etc, etc.
